Really considering purchasing one of these after I seen an older thread. Anyone have info on how difficult it is to set up? Does it just connect up to a satellite and off you go or? Does it have Android OS and Kodi on it?

    Thanks!

The box is very capable but is not plug and play. There is some tinkering required to get the best out of it. Personally, I ipted for the wetek theatre SAT setup with android also. Suits my needs fine. It's the easier of the potential modification options.

Not that easy to set up, but well worth it if you put the time into it.

Have one myself and just use the Kodi setup on it. Gave up on the sat tuner side of it as was too difficult and I already have a sat sky setup.

I'm the same. Sky working fine but I wouldn't mind cancelling sport's and just use Kodi. I'm paying €36 for sports and €13 for BT/Setanta it'll be paying for itself.

    Cheers.

They're 2 different types of tuner. 1 is for satellite and the other is for terrestrial/cable.

Is it worth it for Android alone ( eg no satellite)?

Which is better for apartment without dish ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,591 ✭✭✭tommycahir

Get the dvb-s tuner if you have a satelite dish and get the dvb-t tuner if you have a cable connection such as upc/virgin.

These boot directly into kodi on openelec and you'll need to install any addons etc yourself

There is an option of installing android on them if you want to go down that route and there are guides on wetek forums and on the tips and tricks thread on android forum here.

Then there is another option of using an enigma2 image on a mSD card, the most popular enigma2 image at the moment is pbnigma and I have put together a guide on it at http://forum.kodicommunity.com/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=499

Don't be fooled this box is not plug and play, it is also not a choice for most people to replace their sky box as it is still a little finicky at times..

This is exactly the same box hardware wise as the wetek play but comes with openelec installed by default rather than android. It also doesn't come with the wetek cloud membership card and benefits (not a major gap tbh) it also has a specific openelec remote (nice remote) which has some issues when scrolling in enigma images which if going down that route is recommended to buy the e2remote of wetek themselves..

    Hope this helps people..

Sorry for the stupid question but can this do the same job as a Saorview/Freesat combi box like the Ariva 250?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,766 ✭✭✭RossieMan

It can but it's not simple. You'll need another USB tuner for soarview, or go down the oscam route.

Well Id have no trouble setting it up, I do plenty of Android flashing and media centres and that kind of thing, Im just wondering if I set it up would it do the job from then on or is it constant work to keep it going, unreliable in day to day use etc?

So you get all channels if u have cable connection ??

If you have an antenna, you will get the saorview channels. If you have a dish, you will get the UK free to air channels. If you have an Internet connection, you will get other stuff. Beware though, this box is sold in either a SAT or terrestrial option. Choose wisely. There are of course USB saorview tuners which I'm sure can be added to a SAT box.

No as you can't get a T+S tunder combination on these, you would have to get the S tuner and add a separate usb tuner for DVB-T

Around how much would a separate USB tuner cost?

What software do these boxes use to tune in TV channels and to manage them? I've used DVBLink on a windows box & that can be a pain to setup and get tv guide information working.

My bad, I wasn't including shipping. :o I was/am doing a couple of things at the same time. Shipping used to be free, so I assumed before I went forward.
And I was trying to post it in case/before anyone else paid €65.
    I'll edit it.

Great price but just as an FYI, WeTek are releasing new boxes shortly.

Wetek Play 2, Wetek Play 2S, Wetek Core, Wetek Hub, Wetek Streamer and the Wetek Streamer 4k
    https://www.wetek.com/blog/view/53/news-from-cabsat-2016-dubai

I'm holding out for a Wetek Play 2S myself.

Thanks for your write up @tommycahir do you know if its possible to us pbenigma as a streamer from other enigma box.
    e.g.
    1. A dual tuner sat box running enigma
    2. A second box connected via lan to first box and streaming channel from tuner 2 on first box?

I currently use my open elec to do option 2 above, but dont like the KODI interface and would prefer to use enigma if its possible. thanks in advance for any advice.

    Thanks!

Bear in mind, this is an old Amlogic S805 or S812 chip, so about 2-3 years old. Amlogic do not support it anymore it's so old, so an update to a newer Android version than JELLYBEAN is not really possible. So forget Kitkat, lollipop, Marshmallow or Android N. Wetek to their credit have tried to update the software using apps from a Samsung Galaxy S3, yes that old!

It's never going to be quick - its an Amlogic S805. I have it and I like it, but in some ways regret going for such an old processor chip. But getting a box with a modern day chip like the Amlogic S912 or Rockchip RK3188 is pricey!

If you install the WetekOS 1.1.7 on the box you get a Android launcher giving you access to
    - Wetek-Theatre - so all your FTA satellite channels the same as you would on any satellite FTA box
    - Android Jellybean, oddly enough with two app stores installed, one is google play and the other is Aptoide, and many of the pre-installed apps are from Aptoide. But at least you can install whatever apps you want from Google Play as long as they supports Jellybean - so Netflix, Youtube and Spotify are fine
    - We.Control is an app on an android device that you can use as a remote control because the remote control they give you does not work 100% with WetekOS, but with OpenElec OS. It only works if the box is on wifi.
    - Kodi is also preinstalled with WetekOS 1.1.7 so you can install any add-ons you want.

I am not an expert but iirc there is an enigma2 addon that will allow you to play IPTV lists which might be an option. in my opinion it is an even uglier approach that kodi. http://www.sat-universe.com/showthread.php?t=285717

There is also a way of including IPTV playlists into the bouquets eg http://www.satnigmo.com/2681/put-iptv-channels-enigma-2-bouquets/ which might be a more acceptable option?

You might be best searching on likes of sat-universe or sattvhelp forums for more info.

A final option might be to flash android to the box and use one of the android apps to stream from the box?

You can share your satellite feeds from PBnigma, Enima2 (Tuxbox) or TVHeadend with Kodi using a client. There are a load of different ways to do it.
Easiest way is probably to get the IP address from your Wetek and using Kodi on another as client.

The S805, S812 are only about a year and a half old (maybe slightly older). The Wetek uses AML8726-MX which is older, but is very stable, and has opened up a load of devices. The S812 is still buggy, and the S805 is excellent for live TV. The S912 isn't due out until the second half of this year and could be riddled with bugs. It's unlikely it will be worth getting on release unless you want to develop on it. There's a roadmap somewhere, probably CNX.
What you may gain in speed, you may lose in stability. The S812 is only getting better because of the work done on a few other forums, and afaik, the Core uses it but it isn't without its faults.
I wouldn't get a Rockchip in one of these boxes, unless they had a lot more development. They're good in audio devices though.

I'm also interested how support for Openelec will be going forward, as it seems the team has split up due to creative differences with only the original developer left, and everyone else gone to LibreELEC.

This might a be a silly question but can't find the answer here or on their website.

I have freesat and saorview both connected straight into the back of my smart tv as they have the connections built in.

What are the advantages of using this openelec over my setup? Does the box pull in more channels via the Internet connection? I'm trying to workout if buying this box gives me more than what I already have apart from a nice UI?

This is not an android box (but can be flashed with wetek android image), this runs openelec by default out of the box.

It also has twin tuners which means you can hook it up to your satellite dish and receive channels over that rather than streaming them all over broadband.

You csan boot to a mSD card which will allow you run an enigma2 image to have an alternative way of accessing the satellite channels
