Forged Derailleur Hanger Question

Completed a facelift on the old aluminium hybrid bike over the weekend. Went from flat bars to drop bars with a new front and rear derailleur and new microshift 7 speed shifters. My intended use are the Greenways of Waterford and Mayo over the summer.

I had to drill the old derailleur out as it had seized completely and the alan key thread wore :-( Anyway luckily the new derailleur attached without a bother. However it has made me think that that if anything happens to this hanger then I am up s$%t creek without a cog.

Is there such a thing as a conversion from a forged to a detachable derailleur? I presume that if anything does happen it then I am into new frame territory. Just trying to future proof things if that is possible. Bike has sentimental value and I don't want to turn it into a fixie! :-/

    Thoughts appreciated.

Good news is that you can manage without the forged derailleur hanger.

I have an old Carlton steel frame that had the forged derailleur hanger damaged many years ago. We got a standard derailleur hanger and attached it over the dropout and secured with a plate and bolt inside the drop out.

The only modification we had to make was to put on a slightly thinner axle spacer which let us move the cassette away from the plate that was holding the derailleur by moving the whole wheel over slightly. If you are really fussy then you could get the wheel dished as well but mine is fine. I am running ten speed STI levers and it shifts fine.
