Thinking of having a garden house built. Are we mad?

Our house is a 3 bed semi and I have always said that I would love a playroom but my OH is undecided about building a full extension. Our back garden is fairly small and an extension would cost a lot and cause a fair bit of upheaval. In any case, we won't have the money to build on for a few years.

However, we have been looking at garden rooms and they seem like a really good option to give us the extra space without taking up too much of the garden or costing too much. It would mainly be a playroom for the kids, maybe with another small area for relaxation. We have enough money at them moment to have one done (I think!) and we were thinking that it's a good compromise for the full extension.

Does anyone have a garden house? Do you recommend it or not? Or would we be better off holding out for the full extension? Or even building a block shed instead?

Edit: just realised that I might have posted this in the wrong area. Mods feel free to move thanks.

we went to rds home show, we saw lots of option there like log cabins or steel sheds also.
Block build are bit costly but good in long run.

We're in the same boat as yourself, 3 bed semi with a tiny garden, However we do have a block built shed which is ideal as a playroom if it we got it insulated and put a proper roof on( it has a galvanised roof at the moment). I don't know much about garden rooms but I do know the shed has come in extremely handy for us as extra storage space I can't imagine what our house would be like without it, My almost 4 year just loves it,mind you can't let him in there as it's full of clutter. I'd imagine you would be better off with the shed in the long run

My OH would love a block shed but I'd be afraid that no matter how hard we tried to make it a livable functional space, it would end up being a clutter magnet! My OH would probably just think 'SHED' and fill it with tools and stuff :pac: It does sound like the best option for the long term though.

If your garden is big enough you coukd build one so that there is room for both uses My OH saw the shed when buying the house and thought great a mancave but hasn't gone to stage yet unfortuanately 😅

I was going through the housing ads yesterday and came up to this one and the only thing that catch my eye is the outbuilding kind of extra bedroom in the garden, it looks very neat from the outside and spacious from the inside of course you can easily use it for a playroom and as your kind grows up for her little personal space or so, I'll leave this one for your imagination. So in my opinion you would be way better of with proper brick build, count this as an investment too, if done properly this would raise your house value appropriately...

Have a look at the pictures on daft ''bungalows-for-sale/balbriggan/5-clonard-court-balbriggan-dublin'' unfortunately I couldnt post the pictures because of a new user rule...; /

That's what my OH was saying, go the width of the garden and we could get a playroom and a little utility/tool room too. The garden is small enough but would be worth sacrificing a bit of it IMO, it'd be great for the kids to be able to play between it and the garden in the summer :) And we could stick a sofa bed out there for visitors. I wonder what the finished cost would be to built/roof/insulate/finish one?
