    Bought new stihl 271 chainsaw and was wondering where is the serial nmb on the saw

    There's a nmb printed on top of exhaust box only visible when you take of cover, would that be it

    there should be a sticker on the front of the saw showing where its made there should be a serial number on that sticker.the serial number is stamped on a flat area between the felling spike and the top of the guide bar.

    I know this is obvious and you've probably tried it but make sure the chain brake isn't engaged.

    yeah , brake isn't engaged. the chain will turn but looks like it is under pressure turning it?

    Has the chain been over tensioned or is there any damage to the end of the chain links that fit in the guide bar slot? Has the guide bar slot gotten damaged or squeezed?

    When you remove chain/bar, does the sprocket turn freely?
