Many touring cyclists I know carry a pepper spray - against dogs. There are countries that have much higher population of dogs on the loose than Ireland and where carrying a pepper spray is not illegal.

"“They beat us and used a spray,” the driver was quoted as saying"

Party A: "Party B tried to run me over!"
Party B: "Party A threw themselves in front of me!"

Party A: "They then assaulted me!"
Party B: "They then assaulted me!"

Party A: "They broke my finger with their face!"
Party B: "They broke their finger against my face!"

    etc., etc.

That Stickybottle article is very much in the "he said, she said" stage of the whole thing. Maybe more of the facts will come out over time, maybe not, in the meantime such articles tell us little or nothing.

Does mention it being illegal to have the pepper spray though.

Pepper spray claimed by driver and not confirmed by rider or police AFAIK

The carrying of pepper spray in this country requires a firearms licence.

Well duh, why would you need pepper spray if you had a gun? :pac:

In Ireland? I am well aware of this. How about Belgium?

Think he's potentially in trouble there. Fine or even a jail sentence according to the lads commentating on bike channel the other day (they were explaining why he wasn't taking part in that race). But as was mentioned above I don't think it's actually proven yet and seems to be just what the driver said

    Found this:
Belgium: Pepper spray is classified as a prohibited weapon.

Possession is illegal for anyone other than police officers, police agents (assistant police officers),[24] security officers of public transport companies and custom officers to carry a capsicum spray. is also authorised after obtaining permission from the Minister of Internal Affairs.[25]
