Anyone know if you can buy or build a really cheap desktop for under €200? I need one with a HDMI and VGA port and don't need an OS as will be installing Ubuntu. Is second hand my best bet?

You can put together a fairly cheap build for about €250

    Specs
    Intel Pentium €50
    4gb RAM €30
    Board €50
    Case €30
    120gb SSD €60
    300w PSU €30
    Total €250

Second hand is probably worth looking into for handiness sake, don't bother limiting yourself to no-OS only PCs

Cheers. Yeah I reckon it will be less hassle going for a second hand. There's so many out there though

If you are going to install ubuntu, just look for either
    A) Digital's build above
    B) A PC and just fire in a new drive with no OS on it, or you can use another PC to install it on that drive and make it bootable.
    Upto you.

Ubuntu can be installed from inside Windows using Wubi

Where's the best place to buy components? Thinking of doing the build myself

If you dont need a high spec PC and dont mind about the aesthetics then it is worth checking out your local transfer station and pulling some parts. You should pick up a case, DVD RW and possibly a HDD.

    What's a local transfer station?

Its a recycling/reuse kinda place. In America.

PC User this is an Irish forum predominantly, thus the .ie.

    computer universe

Looking at a laptop on this and the shipping part is confusing as hell. If you don't select DHL or UPS is it shipped via standard shipping?

Do people normally use that or go for DHL/UPS?

Never ordered from them, but I presume people use the couriers

Thanks for clearing that up ED. But they are also called transfer stations here in Ireland. The changed the name from landfill/dump a few years back when people started to recycle.

My local one in Milltown Co Kerry is usually a goldmine for computer parts.

bought a refurb laptop from this crowd a couple of years back:

only issue was that the battery was dead, just bought a replacement for ~20

the parents are still using it, no problems...

Ended up buying a Lenovo laptop off Computer Universe (with no OS) for €250. Good specs and lots of potential for upgrading.

Thanks to everyone for their help
