Is it possible to tax a car without having the Vehicle Reg Book(VRB) or does the car have to be in your name first? I recently bought a second hand car and the dealer sent it off and I'm waiting for it to come back to tax it. But someone told me that you have to tax it first and then you get the VRB? Sounds odd to me because where would I get chassis number and other details I need for the form or do I need to get those details off the dealer?

It also means I've no excuse if the Gards stop me and I tell them I can't tax my car till the VRB arrives!!

If it's new you can tax online with the last 6 digits of the VIN. If 2nd hand check the link below and once the change of ownership is up you can request a PIN to tax it.

Thanks Del. That's very handy. No change in ownership in the last 3 months so it's not up yet. When it is up, do I ring my local Motor Tax offices or Motor Tax Office in Shannon for PIN?

Op when did you buy the car. I bought 2nd hand on the 1st april and had the book by the 6th and got my new tax disc today. It shouldn't take any longer than 10 days.

I only bought it last Friday, the 8th April, so I wasn't really expecting the VRB back that soon so that's why I was wondering could I tax it w/o the VRB. I panicked a bit because I got some, as it turns out, dud information from someone telling me I needed to tax it first BEFORE I got the VRB.

At least now I can keep an eye on-line as soon as its transferred into my name Ill get the PIN and sort the tax out. Nothing worse then driving around in a car with no tax no matter when you bought it.
