Store brands that are better than main brands

Noticing a lot recently that the likes of super valu and dunnes have a lot of decent own brand foods that are superior to the main brands.

    2 that have stood out

SuperValu 'cornettos' €1.89 for 4 (Cornetto 4 packs around €3)
SuperValu tortilla chips - €1 for a big bag (likes of Doritos €3)

What else can we add to the list?

It's been a while since I've visited one of their stores, but Marks and Spencer had a wonderful 2009 Barolo that was as fine an example of the style that I've tasted.

JD Gross chocolate in Lidl is phenomenal. Absolutely gorgeous and laughs in the face of the likes of Cadbury's mockolate!

Find the steak in Lidl better than any other store

Read that several times on Boards about both Lidl and Aldi steaks so I've tried them a few times. Been seriously disappointed a couple of times and underwhelmed the rest of the time. Won't go near them now. Had some from SuperValu recently that were probably the best I've ever had from a supermarket.

Supervalus daily basic jaffa cakes @85c are exactly the same as their fancier packaged own brand @€;1.30ish

Dunnes own brand choc biscuits defo the best on the market

Aldi dishwasher tablets. Way better & cheaper than Finish.

Lidl bin-bags. The white ones with the drawstrings. Virtually indistructable.

Tesco value baked beans are the nicest I have ever tasted. I think the Lidl potato salad is streets ahead of the rest too.

      • Lidl's Gingernut biscuits, fantastic, best ever.
      • Aldi's Milk Chocolate biscuits, mentioned on Boards before as to die for and more than give McVities a run for their money.
      • Tesco ice cream splits, really really nice, very few people know about them
      • Tesco Oatcakes, half the price of Nairns Oatcakes and far, far nicer
      • Lidl luxury fruit and nut museli - oh my God, so so good and about a third of the price of same size box of Alpen museli
      • Tesco's peanut and cashew nut mix - I like KP nuts and will pay for them but these are very good.
      • Aldi's Dairyfine milk chocolate - not just to eat but to bake with, melts like a dream and tastes on par with Lindt milk choc

ALDI do nice crisps called "okey dokeys", ya know instead of "hunky doreys"... They're fantastic, better than hunky doreys.

Twice I've bought fancier bin bags and the side fell out of them.

Don't Lidl do some awesome own brand tea bags?

I keep meaning to try them, but can never remember which ones.

Plenty of products are the same as the main brands, only with different labelling and sometimes packaging.

The Aldi ones that come in a box (specially selected or something like that)?
Eat them quite a lot, never had a bad one.

Dunne's "My Family Favourites" chocolate digestive biscuits are excellent, and unbelievable value at 60c for a 400g pack.

SuperValu vanilla ice cream (tub) is possibly the best one I've ever tasted. It's far superior to Hagen Das

Here's a slightly odd one, but quite valid I think! I'm not going to seriously announce that Halfords brand socket-sets are "better" than the likes of Teng or Snap-On, but in terms of bang-for-buck they really are hard to beat, in particular the 150- and 170-piece sets:

I used to buy Tesco own brand hypoallergenic fabric softener, about 70p for a litre of concentrate and much better than Lenor. The white one, I think it's marketed for babies and sensitive skin. Smells lovely too.

Tesco own brand American Cream Soda is my favourite pop of all time. I think it's about 65p (dunno about euro).

Lidl have a rip-off of Chocolate Hobnobs; I think they're called Oaties. Anyway, they're not a very good copy - you would never confuse it with a Hobnob - but they're delicious in their own right and I think I actually prefer them.

Aldi do "spuddy" crisps. They're fab. They also do fresh stuffed pasta for €1.99 and is far nicer than any other I've bought.

Tesco own brand baked beans are nicer than bachelors and iirc have more "drained weight" and less salt. Tesco coleslaw is really nice compared to some of the others. Their non-bio washing liquid is a fraction of the price of others and just as good. Their magnum style ice creams are amazing!

Lidl's honeyed peanuts are the business

Lidl do really nice popcorn chicken that cost 1 euro I think.

Also for best value Dominics shopping centre in Tallaght :pac:

I get them myself, they are a decent biscuit. The non choco ones are excellent for dunking in tea.

Aldi roasted and salted peanuts in the big white packet , 50 % less salt than KP etc , excellent.

Aldi 6 in one mouth wash is very good. Lidl's tortellini pasta, sun dried tomatoes and olives are good value and decent.

Aldi Weetabix is almost indistinguishable from Weetabix & so much cheaper.

I am a McVities choc digestive addict. The Aldi one's are nicer

Aldi's Moser Roth Dark Chocolate with sea salt, they do a plain, mint, chili & orange flavor too. Only €1.19 & much nicer that bars that cost three times the price.

Not 100% true. Kelloggs and Heinz only make stuff for themselves.

There was a programme on Ch4 about ready meals/meat products.

This factory produced stuff for everyone from M&S to Lidl.

One product for Lidl/Aldi was made using the leftover crap from a M&S or ASDA order and bulked up with water or sauce.

There is a reason it's cheaper.

Tons of SuperValu stuff is as good as/better than brands.
