    1. In good health wear glasses, I expect an eye test report and gp medical report will be required.

    2. Will a driving test or theory test be required.

Found this.. * The Over 70's Renewal Driving Licences /Learner Permits will remain free:D

    cheers

Yep, medical report is required over 70 and I think the GP has discretion in assigning a report that is valid for one or two years depending on your health.

According to this link no driving test is required

all the best, let us know how the renewal goes

Cheers for that, I'm just forward planning, it's not due for renewal until just under 3yrs, if the good Lord spares me:D

The D501 medical report includes a section referring to eyesight so if your GP is happy to sign your eyesight off (most are) then you won't have to worry about a separate eyesight report. If you're fit and well, it's unlikely that your doctor will restrict you to 1 year.

The report is based just on the doctor signing off for group 1 or group 2 vehicles so if you have any bus or truck categories that you wish to renew, the doctor will also have the say on these.

I presume your current licence expires the day before the big 7-0 so yes, you should be getting the next one free. If, however, your current licence falls short of your 70th, you'll have to pay €35 this time but that will be your last that you have to pay for. Bear in mind that replacement licences (if lost, stolen or damaged) will always have to be paid for.

What about keeping up all the vehicle types on the licence when over 70? I still want to drive a camper van and maybe tow a trailer. Are there any restriction on these?

No. If your doctor signs you off, you're good to go. In fact, all group 2 categories are lumped together- it's not like the doctor can specify C1 and C1E only- you'll get all your group 2 categories if your doctor signs you off.

It may be possible that your doctor can sign you off for group 1 categories for 3 years and group 2 categories for 1 year with the intention that you have to come back again next year to get group 2 categories. In any case, rest assured that there are many drivers well past the 70 mark and into 80's even that still retain their group 2 categories.
