IT Contracting in Northern Ireland

    Hi,

I am considering taking an IT contract role in Belfast.
I would be moving to Belfast Monday to Friday as the commute would be too far.

It seems like there are two ways to approach this :
    1. Set up my own limited company
    2. Go through an umbrella company

Does anyone have any advice on what the better approach is?

If I were to set up my own limited company in the Republic, are there any additional implications in taking a contract in the North?
Can I claim accommodation expenses with both approaches mentioned above?

    Thanks.

I would imagine you are better off setting up the company in the UK - you can take dividends out of the company then at a lower tax rate (this is changing slightly) but it is still better than taking it all out as wages here. (you can take dividends in ireland but you are hit with dividend tax and you still pay the normal paye/usc on top of that)

If you setup in Ireland though you may be able to expense mileage & subsistence (which is fairly decent when you're "abroad") - Someone here should know this a bit better

Ehhhhmmmmmmm.... that expensing everything under the sun via your Irish company lark has had its day, ask anyone who's had an audit in the last 3 years as part of this ... http://www.revenue.ie/en/practitioner/tax-briefing/archive/2013/no-042013.html
