Looking at getting an 2007 Volvo s40 diesel. The car I'm interested in has cruise control and has a 6 speed gearbox and is a 2.0L diesel. Anyone own one before, if so what are they like on fuel? What's more fuel efficient a 1.6L or 2.0L diesel?

The 2.0d is more reliable than the 1.6d and nowhere near as sluggish. Mpg would be similar on both but would be a bit better on the 2.0 litre on long runs especially motorway runs. Had a 2006 1.6d and frequently spent money on it.

Cheers I do a good bit of driving so that's a plus that the 2.0 litre would be better. What's most common part did you find that went on it or was a costly repair?

Suspension bits mostly as they go through control arms, bushing, etc quickly but electrics can be iffy at times too along with regular ECU messages on the dash. Some parts are interchangeable with the Ford Focus it's based on but other parts can be expensive especially if you have to buy them from Volvo. Well finished and well equipped cars though but small on the inside.

If you can get a facelift model from 08-, it will hold its value slightly better.

(Further touches such as larger front logo and LED fog lights were added to the facelift in 2011 or so, and the 08 would look more similar to that.)

SE Lux spec really makes the car a nice place to be, adding electric drivers seat, Xenons, Auto Light and Wipes and cruise.

It's a little on the small side in the back, and my 1.8 FlexiFuel has taken its share of maintenance, but nothing absolutely major to be fair, and I've done a lot myself. Certainly nothing I wouldn't expect for a 180k km car.

    In the 70k I've had it for so far;

    1. Clutch and Flywheel at 150k (not my fault!)
    2. Wheel Bearing (€200, hit a kerb)
    3. Boot Lid wiring harness (€40)
    4. Xenon Bulb (€30)
    5. Air Intake Hose (€35)

    Nothing too major there.

Plus general servicing of course, which isn't too dear. Much like the Focus it's based on, some small niggly issues, but generally not expensive fixes.

Thanks lads the car I'm looking at on Saturday has heated front seat, global electric windows, electric front seat, electric mirrors, leather interior, front fogs. I work in the motor trade so going to add HID xenon headlights myself

How the hell are you going to do it and not violate the type approval? Each light has a type of the source engraved on the glass - if does not say DC or DC/R, you cannot have xenon source in it. It will fail NCT as well (https://www.ncts.ie/media/1004/nct-manual-july-2014.pdf, page 30).

Are you going to install self-levelling and self-cleaning lights on it?

The SE Lux will also add self-levelling and high pressure washers as required yo go with the included Xenons.

I would think that the pair of these would be difficult to add later, since the washers is a separate pump to the windscreen as far as I know.

The headlight levelling also uses a different lighting control unit on the dash, and also ties into the Stability Control system (which is upgraded on the SE Lux) to get the angle that the car is sitting at.

All in all, a very complex system which is far more than replacing the bulbs.

There was a Winter Pack available as an option on the S40 at the time. This gave you heated front seats and xenon headlights with washers. Lots of SE models had the Winter Pack fitted.

I've a 08 1.8 Flexifuel in SE Lux or close to it as there seems to be a few options missing from other Lux variations. Have it since August and no mechanical issues so far however the rear middle brake light and drivers side brake light failed and the entire brake light assemblies had to be replaced. Not an easy part to come across apparently as they're LEDs where the lower spec models aren't (or so I'm told). Ended up costing around €500 from main dealer to replace. Having said that I'm happy with it, love the leather seats and they're so comfortable. Road noise is minimal though it can be a bit sluggish some times. Its a nice place to be and IMO looks great still.

One thing that surprised me, front bulb needed replacing and ended up costing €90 from motor factors which didn't match up with the Philips bulb that was in so had to order from online same model which ended up only being €35 but just bear in mind that the bulbs aren't readily available. I wasn't willing to wait the 5-7 working days for replacement bulb. The philips have a blue tint while the motor factors one is a normal colour, looked odd for a while but at least I've a back up bulb now.

Xenon bulbs come in various colour temperatures, it's not unique to Volvo. Motor factors most likely sold you what they had or as close as possible to your existing ones.
