    Hi Folks,
My partner was out of work for a few weeks lately, works construction mainly, anyways, last week he was offered a job but they Guy that's in charge of the company told him he would now be self employed as that is how all his guys work, Now this jobs is probably for a couple of months at most, i don't understand how you go about been a self employed laborer for a couple months? it seems very dodgy to me.

There are companies who can manage your salary for you, a ta small fee.

You can be an employee of an umbrella company which means that you pay tax and full PRSI while being able to claim for expenses.

    Its quiet common it IT.
I normally get them to do the calculations for me so I know how much I'll earn based on a daily rate. You just need to know how many days per month you'll work. The average is 19 taking into account weekends and days off.

I can send you a link if you want to know more.

In construction, it's called sub-contracting. Very common. But it has risks associated with it, too, which you don't usually find in IT.

The company is asking for him to be self employed rather than an employee. Is he qualified as anything in particular, eg electrician, plasterer, etc? The company is trying to get out of having to pay for his taxes. If you husband goes down the self-employed route:
    • He will have to register for income tax and sign off the dole. Prepare accounts and file and pay an income tax return.
    • The PRSI contributions he makes as self employed won't entitle him to any social welfare assistance should he be out of work.
    • He may have to supply his own tools for work
    • He will have to pay for insurance for himself.
    • He would need to invoice the company regularly and chase for payment.
    • He would need to register for VAT and invoice on a reverse charge basis. The company would have to operate RCT on payments to him, and possibly have to deduct 20% RCT and pay over to Revenue for him as he may not have a track record with Revenue as being self employed.

Get your partner to have a read of the above link from Revenue's website. Note that Revenue really do focus on the construction industry for their checks.
