Siemens and Airbus to push electric aviation engines

Companies want to jointly develop engine prototypes with power classes ranging from a few 100 kilowatts up to 10 and more megawatts, for short, local trips

Trains to get ya where ya want to go and them ^^ to get ya the last bit if it's way off the grid is the future I'd imagine.

Aircraft don't need full power for cruise. So you could have a hybrid. Electric power boost for take off / landing and cruise on the jets. What would be cool would be to recharge the batteries on the way down. Would depend on getting electric motors that cost less up front and have lower maintenance costs.

Cordless electric helicopter demo from 1964. Powered by microwaves. Hovering for 10 hours Visions of huge parabolic dishes guiding aircraft with dazzling beams of energy.

this may sound like a stupid question to some, but could they have wind turbines on the plane, or at the speeds they travel, is it far too quick or what are the logistics?

Not stupid at all, look at RAM AIR TURBINES (Picture is for a B757)

On the 777, the blades are 105CM long, so its a big device hanging below the aircraft, however the amount of power which they deliver is extremely limited.

You can't have a wind turbine attached to a plane that would generate enough energy to power an engine to keep the aircraft flying. If you could, you'd have a perpetual motion machine.

The missing link in the equation is that the turbine adds drag to the aircraft. The amount of electricity you generate from it isn't enough to drive an engine to add enough thrust to counteract the drag.

Would it reduce aircraft noise sufficiently to allow later flights in built up areas?
