Claris 8s Rear Derailleur for 34t?

Pretty sure my rear derailleur is on its way out - jockey wheels are worn and its making a terrible noise. Just looking for a replacement this (cyclesuperstore.ie/shop/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=71613) seems to fit the bill but it says max sprocket is 32t (mine is 34t) and 'For use with triple setups' (I only have 2 rings on the front)

Also, no idea if mine is short or long cage. Any adivce?

I'd say that if you already have a 32 then the rear mech is a long cage one. (I could be wrong though)
I think Shimano have a chart on their site somewhere that gives all the compatable parts, so you might be able to find an alternative from there

Thanks! It seems I need the RD-2400-SS. There is no Claris 8s that supports 34t - seems when I replaced the sprockets a while back I got the wrong one (still have the old one and its only 32t).

Unless you're climbing up very steep stuff, you're unlikely to need a 34 tooth sprocket ( or even a 32). Do you ever find yourself using the big cog at the back when in the small one at the front?
You could consider getting a new 8 speed sprocket with a tooth range something like 12-27 or thereabouts. Shouldn't set you back too much and will lead to closer jumps between gear ratios.

I never use the small cog at the front :) I'll probably by a new sprocket as well.

Not quite sure how to answer that!!
Google 'cross-chaining'. Puts more wear on components such as chain, and may explain the apparent demise of your derailleur.

Possibly - didn't know about cross chaining. However, its lasted ~12k km so not that bad. I've generally avoided using the front derailleur as I'm used to having crap bikes where the front shift is unreliable. Didn't know it was an issue so will start using the front now.
