Ahhh come on, its just not a normal running year without the good old annual Boards Waterford "too long/too short" thread

Some craic last year running through the traders in red square like loose cattle

Must say I really enjoyed the half last year, great way to see the city. It was humid as hell though, didn't envy the full distance guys heading out the tramore rd. Finishing on a running track is a great touch.

anyone know if this is a hilly marathon or would it be good for a PB? Any link to the course would be welcome.

Last year's course is on their website: http://www.waterfordvikingmarathon.com/the-race/route-details/2015-full-marathon-route.html

It looks very much like the 2014 course though I think they managed to locate the extra 500 meters they had forgotten.

It's neither particularly flat nor particularly hilly. I won't be running it again because you can't trust them to get the distance right and after 2014 it took them several weeks to issue a half-hearted apology for the short course. Until then they had been celebrating how many runners had run a PB!

Am loving the finishers medal and tshirt.

Hadn't heard of any distance issues from last year - hopefully it's sorted this time

Anybody else planning on running this?

Yeah I've been going well for a while now so I think I might give the half a shot for a pb. Did it last year and I like the course. I said after last year I wouldn't mind heading out to tramore but Im going to give Longford a bash at the full this year.

Yes - I've signed up for the Waterford marathon. Haven't done Waterford before, hoping they've teased out the issues from previous years! It'll be my fourth marathon, but my first since Dublin 2012, so fingers crossed!

Any tips/insights from those with experience of the course?

The first few miles are in/around the city centre, which is nice and there should be some good support along the route. It's a pretty fair course, there are no big hills just a few drags.

There is a gradual pull around mile 3 (you probably won't even notice it) and again between mile 7 & 8.

From mile 8 to mile 14 is all flat, as you head out the road to Tramore (you will leave the half marathon runners at mile 10) There is a small incline at mile 14 as you enter Tramore, and then it's flat all the way in and along the prom and loop that takes you back to the Tramore Road. There should also be a nice sea-breeze which is always welcome :) and again support, especially along the prom.

There is a small drag at mile 19 and then you head back in the Tramore Road, which is flat, apart from a small hill at mile 20.5.

Then mile 21 - 25 is flat again, and you head into the Eco park, and out on to the road that will take you into the RSC for a super track finish!

Here is a map that shows water stations http://www.waterfordvikingmarathon.com/Marathon-Route-Map-2015.pdf

Best of luck, and enjoy :D

Many thanks! That info is much appreciated!

Good to hear there are no major hills and the track finish should be good. I'm slightly less nervous now!

Bit of a silly question I know considering what happened over the last couple of years but is this still an AIMS certified course? And does that mean it's a Boston qualifier course?

Yep, it's AAI and AIMS cretified.

    http://distancerunning.co.uk/races/10103.html

Boston doesn't even need AIMS. AAI certified courses will qualify you.

Love the finish on the track at the RSC. I have only done this once, but one thing if it rains how do the playing pitches you cross between the eco park and the track hold up or does it make it a bit of a cross country

I've done it a few times, but I don't remember crossing any pitches  :pac: I thought the exit out of the eco park was on road and then up the slip road past the Yellow House, onto the Cork Rd for about 200 metres, and into the RSC?

I only did it last year so first I thought I must have cheated so I asked a friend who did it last year also and he remembers crossing a pitch, for 200 metres or so.

I am in also having done the Previous 4 full. Distance was an issue but was sorted last year. The quarter marathon cuts across the playing field but the half and full do not.

As for hills it is not too bad a few drags in and out on the Tramore Road about 2 miles from the town and few short sharp shocks in the eco park when your are at 25 miles. I have done better in Waterford than in DCM but it can be warm!!

Enjoy last 22 miler in the morning

Any reports from Waterford then? Just the long and the short of it, like.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,550 ✭✭✭✭Krusty_Clown

Pauline Curly in 3rd overall in the marathon. 3 Hour pacers finished in 6th and 7th, so looks like a very poor quality field (no disrespect to the top 5 who all ran great times). Pacers were all bang-on, so looks like the distance was likely correct for the marathon.

Times were pretty poor in the half-marathon too, with just two runners under 75 minutes (Sergiu taking the win in 67 minutes by a narrow margin). Looks like they're still getting high numbers (around 1,700+), but the more competitive runners are giving it a miss.

Philip Harty won 2.37, only 7 ran sub 3.

It's quite windy down here, North westerly which made the last 8 miles very difficult.

Fortunately no issues with distance etc and the course was very well marked out and plenty of stewards all over the place and loads of water stops/gel stations.

The half and 1/4 really bump up the numbers and add to the atmosphere.

A bit of Redemption for the organisers!

Had a group of 7 at half way but the wind in tramore really hammered the group. Only 1 survived to mile 23 and she blitzed the last 1.5 miles to hit a 2.59 16 minute pb!!

Were you one of the pacers? Looks like Sally had her own personal entourage!

I see you've achieved god like status in your home county, not many just get referred to by first name only. Your almost like Pele!!

Where do you see results Krusty? I must say that sounds like a weak top end alright. I've done a few small marathons in my day but I don't think any of them were that skinny. Only 5 or 6 sub 3 you say (not counting Pacers, sorry Gavlor)??

5th WVM completed on a breezy but pleasant day. Tough last few miles but well organised and plenty water stops. The finish in the RSC is worth it though - Will be back hopefully for #6. Thanks to all involved

Really enjoyed my first Waterford marathon. The wind over the last few miles was tough but nice route and thought it was well organised with lots of volunteers and water stations. Managed to get a PB and go sub-4 - a first for me! :D

    Thanks to all involved!
