Advice on how/where to buy new tyres

We have a 2011 Nissan Juke and the tyres are now worn and in need of replacement. This is our first car and we have never bought new tyres, so we are clueless. We don't want to just rock up to a garage and take what we are given. Does anyone have any recommendations or suggestions on what we should look for in terms of safety, performance, price, etc? Are there any particular things we should avoid? We use the car 90% for city driving, 10% motorway, if that makes any difference.

    Is it 215/55R17?

Just go to 2/3 local tyre shops and ask for quotes for 4 tyres, fitted and balanced.
Generally good brands are Bridgestone, Uniroyal, Michelin - brands you have heard the name of.

You can find reviews of various brand and makes here www.tyrereviews.co.uk

They would be either 205/60/r16 or 215/55/r17.

My only advice is to stay far away from the cheapest of cheap Chinese tyres....

There are the main branded tyres as mentioned already.... There's also Continental, Pirelli, Toyo, Yokohama, Goodyear, Falken, Dunlop and so on.... There are some good value/budget, but decent quality brands like Kumko, Barum, Semperit and Fulda that are fine tyres....

Many will have an opinion on what the best tyre is... Mine is Continental but have used Fulda in years gone by when stuck... You won't go wrong with anything from the above list tho'. I buy my tyres online from Camskill and have them fitted by a chap in Ranalagh.

But stay away from the cheapo chinese ones....

oponeo.com have good prices and links to customer reviews too.

Of course you have to pay a local place to get them fitted but you should still save money (up to €50 per tyre in my experience).

If you're in Dublin ,check out discount tyres . got some there recently and they were cheaper than online purchase

If you ring around you can generally get the same deal without having to haul tyres around.

Maybe in Dublin, but out here in the sticks, the competition isn't too strong and prices aren't as good.

    Yes, they are Bridgestone 215/55/R17.

Thanks for all the advice, I'll call around. Discount Tyres looks good and they are giving fuel vouchers as a bonus at the moment.
