Is it too late to set spring Barley considering the weather is bad until at least next week?

If so is there any alternatives if I decide not to set Spring Barley?

I think if it's sown after the 17th of April it has a negative effect, that's what I was always told anyway.

I wouldn't think so. All depends on what sort of weather we get over the summer. I got 3 ton to the ac on a '1 spray programme' and it was sown later than this in 2013.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

id say very little spring barley has been set yet. I don't have mine set anyway and I will be setting it even if its may before it dries up enough to get planting. I have the ground ploughed but it just hasn't been dry enough to till yet.

A neighbour normally sets on !8th of March on ground bounding me and his rule of thumb is for every day earlier you can sow, you can harvest a half a day earlier.

And every day later is harvesting a half day later. So earlier sown has a longer growing season and better potential.

Saying that, there is virtually no spring cereals sown round here yet.

Sorry to hijack this thread but I was hoping it put in peas and barley undersown with grass have I missed the boat or is there still time? It will probably be 3 weeks before we will get in with a plough round here.

plenty of time i have peas to sow still and am in no rush as they like heat to get going quickly. grass seeds need heat too toget up and growing quick

Only spring wheat in since mid March. Half the ground for barley ploughed, rest lying idle. Concerned but not overly concerned.

Loads of baley yet to sow around me. I sowed my barley on the 22/3 and it is only peeping up. The problem now it will be at least tomorrow week by the time it dries out. Ploughed ground is saturated.

I think that was based on soil temps, sunlight ect on average over a number of years. There's no point making a mess of the place in a year like this. Very little sown around here yet. If the weather gets any worse the ploughed fields will be indistinguishable from the poached fields...

Has much been sown in the drier parts of the country?

Bit that was sown near me about 2-3 wks ago just peeping now. Our land is well soaked again after today's 'april showers', I reckon I'll be undersowing with grass. Pre-harvest roundup ban now
