i currently have a cyclocross bike, a 2014 kona jake which i mainly use for commuting at the moment but plan to use for a bit of touring in ireland with the medium term goal being to cycle istanbul to dublin with a mate who's moving home from there next year.

i find the jake a bit slow on the commute and fancy something that shifts a bit better.

having (literally) cracked open the change jar yesterday, i have about €700 to spend and am wondering whether that's best spent on some upgrades for the kona or maybe getting something a bit more suited to the commuting / light touring combo.

i've previously had my eye on a genesis equilibrium 20 and missed out on one in my size (58cm) that was sold here last year!

    would welcome any opinions!

Are you comfortable on the Kona?

If yes stick. Comfort is the most important thing with that kind of trip I would think.

Bike seems fine to me for commuting and light touring

Prior to leaving I would fit new cables, chain and cassette along with decent tyres.

Tools to repair, chain, spokes etc and the wherewithal to use them

If your going to be loaded maybe a new wheelset built with strength in mind with spare front, drive and non drive side

    Enjoy should be a blast.
