Maternity Benefit/PAYE Credits

I am currently working on a 6 month contract, due to finish on 06th May. I am due a baby at the end of May. As far as I am aware I am not entitled to any maternity benefit as I was living abroad from Jan 2013 - May 2015, so therefore do not have the relevant contributions. I started working again in Ireland in November 2015.

Is there anyway I can keep my tax credits running while I will be on my maternity leave? Or is there anything I can do about the gap in my contributions when I was living abroad? I find it extremely infuriating that I have worked and paid tax since I was 16, left the country for just over two years, not costing the government a penny and now my years of contributions amount to nothing when I actually need it! Any help/advice appreciated!!

Tax credits have nothing to do with maternity benefit entitlement. Tax credits are not contributions towards social welfare entitlement. You are getting mixed up with PRSI.

I'd say you'd be better asking this question in the State Benefits forum

If you are on Maternity Leave, your insurance credits clock up same as if you are working. Same for Parental leave.
I'd try get your Maternity leave to start on the 5th of May, so you are going on leave from a job.

Its nothing to do with tax credits. Nothing whatsoever.
If you were working in another EU country and paying that country's equivalent of PRSI then you can combine your PRSI from both here and there to get Maternity Benefit.
if this is you, get a maternity benefit application form pr0nto and fill it up
