    Hello Boards,

Can anyone tell me if an employer is entitled to ask for 4 previous work references/

He also said I might need to provide a credit reference!!!

Its only working in warehouse shift work, not a bank or security company.

I've no real problem with the references... but 4... and the credit reference.

I have to let him know by Monday at the latest.

    What do you think?

He can ask for anything he wants before he gives you the job. It's up to you if you want the job and want to give them. You don't have to.

He wouldn't have a right to ask and you wouldn't have to give the if you already have the job.

They are entitled to ask for as many references as they want. Depends on whether you want the job enough, up to you to decide whether to supply them or not.

I've never heard of an employer looking for a credit check, that's mad! Only thing close I've ever heard of was credit checks for board directors etc. It's not something I'd be comfortable with providing myself.

Do you provide a credit check to an employer? Does it cost?

I thought that they would just go and get one done themselves?

The only way to provide a credit check to an employer here who is not a member of the ICB is to request your history from the ICB and hand it over.

afaik, it's illegal to compel people to do this.

Organisations/employers seeking to access information held by a credit referencing organisation about prospective or current employees could present data protection concerns. Any forced requirement placed upon employees to seek credit history information from the Irish Credit Bureau, for example, for employment screening purposes could be considered a breach of the Data Protection Acts

But it is not forced. Op is being asked for it. This is not illegal. Op does not have to provide it. But employer doesn't have to provide the job either.

It is an unusual request. Personally I try to stay away from people like this employer. In my experience a nutty request now leads to a not so nice person to work for. It's easy for me to say I don't need the job. I feel for the op.

Employer can make it a condition of offering the job that the op provides it.

That's the usual circumstance that would be considered forced/compelled, a way for the employer to get information about the op that they are not entitled to.

But he can request it before any job is offered. I he request it from 10 applications but there is only 1 job on offer then it's not illegal.

Like I said it sounds to me like an employer to stear clear from

And 4 references, I think there may be items of value in that warehouse.

is it a paddy power or casino or warehouse for high values item?

    that would be pretty common,

cash van drivers have to hand over bank details regularly and have them monitored to make sure everything's okay

    just to add,

If you work in a high value distribution center or warehouse which hold value items such as expensive drink, computer parts etc it is standard practice for an employer to check you have no outstanding large debts or financial issues.

I have done numerous ones before as part of the process, you request the employer to give these, not force them, but if they dont you just go elsewhere with the job.

Unfortunately some places could have you handling parts of medicine which is in the 10's of thousand of euro
