Worried about a dog

On the way to and from work yesterday, we noticed a dog lying on the grass bank beside the road. It chased the cars a little, but didn't go onto the road, so I assumed it was just from the farm close to where it was. However, it was still there yesterday evening and again this morning. It looks ok, and isn't tied, but I'm now a little worried that it's lost/been dumped. If it's there this evening, I plan on stopping to see what the story is and to check if it belongs to the house. However, where do I go/who do I contact if it's not?

I'd happily take the dog home with me if it is dumped/lost, but we're gone for 12 hours a day, so it's not really feasible to keep it locked in all day with no company, and there's no-one around who could call in and check it/take if for a walk, etc. I know all the organisations are up to their eyes at the moment, so I'm hesitant to contact them, but I given the dog has been there for at least 24 hours, I'm worried for it.

It's on the west Wicklow/South Dublin border (near Bohernabreena). Which organization(s) would be best to contact? I see <snip> is near Woodstown - would that be the closest/best to contact?

If the dog is lost it could be chipped so if you're able to take it to a vets they'll be able to scan it and check if there's a chip. I think the gards can scan for chips now too since they're supposed to be enforcing chipping?

I know of an old dog on a farm who waits at the bottom of the lane way during the day. Tbh if you didn't know better you would presume it's dead!

It might be a similar case with this dog. Though the car chassing thing would be of some concern. Can you ask at the a farm or house before calling for it to be collected perhaps to check if it belongs to anyone?

    Just an update on this:

The dog wasn't on the road on Tuesday evening or yesterday morning/evening, so hopefully all has worked out well for the dog, and that the owners realized that the dog was wandering.

Thank you all for your input.

good to hear. Too many people just dont bother to stop and try to help, so kudos to you for the thought. Hopefully he was from a nearby farm as you say - hopefully too you wont see him again
