I'm loving in old bungalow type house. Basement underneath. There is a small of grass/weed in the bedroom above basement. It's horrible. There are no neighbours or any one smoking weed in the house. The basement does not smell but the room above does. Anyone any idea on what it could be

    Ghost of Bob Marley?

I'm not a weed smoker so I can't say for sure, but I had a friend who helped run a medical marijuana dispensary in San Francisco and some of her "samples" were pretty rank. Sorry to say some of the smells would have sent me to look if there was some sort of sewer problem. I have cats and when she was around I was always checking the litter box. No disrespect to weed smokers, honestly.

Is the main drainage pipe near the bedroom? When we moved into this house there was a persistent odor in the downstairs that got worse and worse. My husband had worked on construction sites so he set about trying to locate the source. It turned out someone had installed that accordion-style dryer hose in place of the main wastewater drain pipe in the crawl space. Our landlord almost didn't believe him. The landlord's plumber was professionally appalled.

Could there be animals living in the walls?

If it smells like Bob Marley its likely must/mold.
    Is your house damp?

This thread is such a let down btw...

Why is this thread a let down?

Old house. Rented accommodation can't take the smell no matter how much I clean, open windows and spray air freshers it's still there

I had hoped Bob Marley had a secret Garden in your house.

I'd say the floors aren't solid, you may have to rip up the floor and get some cement pumped in, just clay under the floor boards. Or else bobs ghost is down there.

There is what feels like a hole in that room come to think about it. But there is carpet over it so I've no idea what it's like under it . thanks

If you can lift the carpet to look I would.
It may be glued down however.

Yea if it's an old house it's entirely possible there's a mud floor under the boards/carpet. Needs a new foundation. You can get the cement poured in straight from the truck just need to level it off quick, ground would also need to be insulated etc before cement poured in.

Dry rot or wet rot in the timber causing a fungus growth.

I'd ask a timber treatment company to call out, their experence alone might be able to easily identify the smell as they probably have come across it before.
Ask them over the phone first.

Hemp, which is used in plumbing connections (almost said joints :) )can smell if it's getting damp & rotting.
Hemp / flax, is a cousin of weed.
