Selling car due to mileage?

    Hi,

I have had my car for just over three years, and in that time I've put approx 80,000 miles on it, commuting 70 miles up the motorway to Dublin and back, three or four times a week.

It's a six year old car now, with 107000 miles on it and I'm considering selling it, due to the rate at which I putting the mileage up. Now I'm not one of these people that think when cars get over 100000 miles on the clock that they suddenly start falling apart, but because many do think this way, I'm concious that the resale value of the car will starting rapidly dropping from here on in, and it might make sense to try and get into a lower mileage car.

The thing is, I really like the car (prefer if it was a petrol but I need a diesel), it has never let me down, it's in excellent condition with a full main dealer service history and more than anything it has an exceptional spec for this car/engine combination IMO, so I would find it very hard to find a car with a similar spec for my budget. I'm also conscious that I have never spared expense in maintaining the car, so I've put a lot of money into it too.

What do people think? When doing such high mileage, does there come a stage where it makes sense to change the car simply to protect future resale values, despite being happy with the car?

Personally if i still like the car and still enjoy driving it, I wouldn't sell it just because of the mileage getting high, yours with a full service history as well, you know the car.
    What car is it?

Ask yourself how much it's worth now and have a guess at how much it would be worth in a further 3 years but 80000 more miles on it.
I can guarantee you that the loss from now to 3 years further down the line on this car will be alot less than the depreciation you will suffer on a newer car doing that sort of mileage.
In short, if you believe you have a good car, the figures would say is cheapest to keep it.
The other side of this is that you may wish to keep a relatively new car and for some people with fixed reliable income, the best way forward is to change regularly.

I have just over 230k kms on my 2011 car which I've had from new and normally I change my car every 3-4 years .. My current car has given zero bother and eaten up all them miles .. So rather than change it I am keeping it and will spend the money on a weekend pleasure car.

Fingers crossed I'll get it to well over the half million without bother

If a motor is functioning well and you can trust it keep it

There is no detail on what type of car you are driving or what you would intend to trade up to so I can only reply in general terms. I would hold on to the car personally. You know the history of the car and have spent time and money maintaining it. Why give somebody else the benefit of that.

Selling due to fear of future depreciation makes no sense at all. Cars have most of their depreciating done by 5-6 years old. Any future depreciation on your current car will be small compared to the depreciation on a newer car if you trade up.

If you want a new car by all means go ahead and buy one but I wouldn't be doing it for the reason above.

Why sell a perfectly functioning and enjoyable car only to risk buying someone else's problems?

Thanks for all the replies, pretty unanimous!!

The car isn't anything special at all in the scheme of things, it's just a nicely spec'ed example that's well looked after, ideal for the commute I do, and that I'm happy with. I'll leave it at that! - Thanks :)

It must be something very special that you don't want to reveal what kind of car it is :p
