Taxing a car online after being declared off road

I declared a car off road over two years ago .
NCT'd it on Friday and would like to tax it ASAP .
I tried to retrieve the PIN number but the reply on line was that due to the car being untaxed for more than three months I would have to tax it a my local tax office , a round trip of 125 miles .
Reading a couple of other threads re this subject on here it seems that it can be done on line or am i missing something ...?
    Thanks in advance

Your pin is the last 6 digits of car's VIN.

When it's being taxed for the first time in Ireland.

I somehow doubt the OP bought a new car (or imported one), got it registered, then decided to declare it off the road for 2 years.....

Pin is always last 6 digits, it never changes.

However to retax during the off road declaration it must be done in the local tax office apparently, but I think others say they have done it online?
Q11. What if I want to put the vehicle back on the road before the period specified in the declaration expires?

A11. You can cancel the declaration at any time by renewing your tax in your local motor tax office – the validity of the tax disc will commence from the first day of the month in which you tax the vehicle.

So, every year when I tax my car on line using the PIN number sent on the renewal, it's the last 6 digits of my chassis number? Can't say I ever noticed that.

That is correct according to Motortax, personally I never noticed myself either.
Do I use the same PIN every time I tax my vehicle online?

Yes. Your PIN is the last six digits of your Vehicle Registration Certificate (VRC) Number. This number is contained at the top right hand corner of the front of your VRC. This will remain the PIN for this vehicle while in your ownership. This is the PIN that will be issued with each individual motor tax renewal /reminder notice. You may use the PIN associated with a motor tax transaction if you wish to track progress in relation to the issue of the new tax disc.

How did you NCT the car when it was "off road"?

You are allowed to drive to/from the NCT when off the road, it's one of two exceptions.
Q15. What if I'm due to have an NCT while my car is off the road?

A15. A vehicle may be used during the period of a non-use declaration in two cases:

to bring it to and from a test centre for the test; or
to bring it for repair after a re-test, or back to where you are keeping it while it is off the road after the repairs. This option may only be used where an appointment has already been made for a re-test.

This is 100% untrue. When you log into motortax.ie it gives you your name, phone number, address and email address to verify. This would be a serious data protection breach if the PIN number that reveals all this personal information was visible to anyone checking your windscreen (visible VIN). The PIN changes with every renewal.
For a new car, or a car being registered in Ireland for the first time, it's the last 6 digits of the VIN, but there's no owner contact details shown.

Insured it and then drove it directly to and from the Test centre .

Last six digits don't work .
You are correct as when I attempt to tax it I get the same instructions re taxing at the local tax office .
Car is declared off road until September .
Well , I suppose it keeps some civil servant in a job.....
Backward wee country some times though.

I clarified it is in the subsequent post according to Motortax.

I have never taken notice TBH, but why would they have such a specific Q & A if it's incorrect?

So it isn't the last 6 digits of the chassis, it's the last 6 digits of the VRC cert number.

The last six digits of the seven digit number on my registration certificate allow me to tax it on line .
Well done Lads ,especially GM228, thanks for that info you have saved me a long trip to Tralee.

Yes, sorry looking back I see I wasn't entirely clear on that (VRC as opposed to VIN).

So you were able to tax it which means we can confirm the above from Environ is incorrect, it can also be done online!
