Carers Allowance / Benefit

So I've just become a full time carer for my parents.

Mother is totally immobile and was in hospital for over two months followed by almost three months in convalescent. Father is in quite poor health with heart issues that are causing fluid on the lungs, also has Parkinsons and haemoglobin issues. Mother got out of convalescent Tuesday with three hours per day care via HSE. Father back in hospital temporarily (I hope!) with breathing issues, due a valve implant in a few weeks.

They can't cope on their own anymore and need full time care. I've voluntered to pick up most of the slack, with a little help from family members. I'll be doing the majority of the care though.

Not really sure how to proceed in terms of applying for carers benefit / allowance. Few questions:

Which should I apply for (allowance or benefit)?
How long does it take to come through?
How long can I receive payment for?
If it takes time for approval can I claim dole / job seekers in interim?
Is allowance / benefit means tested?
If approved for same can my wife use my TFA?

Any help / advice greatly appreciated!

Have been employed all my life, never claimed any benefits previously. Will be ceasing work with immediate effect.

Then it's your choice really, allowance or benefit
Benefit you can get with no means test at all, it would come through relatively quickly (compared to allowance) you can get it for 104 weeks per parent and you are entitled to your current job back afterwards
Allowance takes longer but you'll get free travel with it and it's got no time limit
Mind you , you can go for benefit now and go for allowance when your benefit runs out
Supply as much evidence of your parents needing full time care as you can
