Being on a package with Virgin that gives free minutes but charges for lowcall numbers i found this site very helpful to bookmark and also saves money.

Yeah - 1890 nos are totally outdated. They were originally intended to save ph users when they were being charged per minute.

This is no longer tge case & we're getting charged for them on top of our 'free call' tariffs.

Some companies who use 1890 no's are probably getting a commission for these calls niw & it can be a nice little earner for them.

State bodys should quote a 'landline' no. in the ph directory / leaflets etc.

The list on saynoto1890 needs to be expanded but is useful.

Saynoto1890 seem to be trying to get all government agencies to provide a landline prominently on their websites. I think it is a scandal that we are paying so much particularly as you often have to hold for long periods waiting for service. It is our taxes that fund these Departments and agencies who are fleecing us with their 1890 numbers.

I recently replaced all mention of the 1890 number I was using in line with a fresh look logo, updated website and new sign writing on the fleet.

I initially signed up to it to encourage calls and that's the whole point behind it, but this was back before the phone and mobile industries became so competitive and for some reason they all kept these types of calls out of bundle so they completely lost their initial purpose, it shouldn't have really been allowed to happen like that, some businesses might be getting a lower volume of calls without even knowing why and this could be behind the reason to some extent. The calls are pricey enough to receive aswell.

I'm actually glad I never signed up for the 1800 now as these were even more expensive to receive and sure almost everyone can call for free now and I only have the one number so it's much easier to market etc.

I don't know why any businesses, especially government ones are still using these. I'm always looking for the national numbers and just save any I find to my phone book if I think I'll be calling the company again.

Practically everyone has national landline calls as part of their phone package these days.

One tip though if all else fails, ring the sales number. They'll answer quickly and then ask to get transferred.

Same story with 076 numbers, some government departments use them (Citizens Information being one). Same start digits to 07 geographic area which may catch some people out. Can't see any reason a fixed office needs a VOIP number.

I find if there is a number for calling from outside Ireland you get through to the same menu . This is usually the landlines number.

I got charged €1.70 for ringing the Collector General from my mobile a couple of weeks ago. Was on for about 4 minutes. Ridiculous stuff.

Sky, the robbing b**t**ds, have an 0818 number that entails a wait of up to 40 mins when you ring it. It has failed me to find the actual number.:(

That number was for Abtran, who operated the Sky CS dept at the time. Sky have since move their main CS dept to Dublin since then afaik.

Sky's one is a joke! They kept me on hold for around 40mins and then 20mins talking. Checked my bill to see how much it cost, €24!!!
