Looking to visit a second German city, already been to Berlin for 5 days.

Which do you recommend Hamburg or Munich?

    Munich no question.

Munich has a lot more to do tourist wise and is a much nicer looking city. It's ideally located for day trips to other places in Bavaria (a must if you're staying in Munich). E.g. Neuschwanstein Castle, Nuremberg, Salzburg, Berchtesgaden (Königssee and Eagle's Nest), Rothenburg (better from Nuremberg, a bit far from Munich), Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Zugspitze.

You could consider staying a night or two in Nuremberg as well as it's only one hour away on the train.

Haven't been to Munich, yet, so can not compare the two.
Hamburg is a great city, with the lakes right in the city centre, the restored warehouses in the harbour city, more canals than Amsterdam and Venice (little known fact) and the harbour itself is stunning, one of the largest in Europe.
Cool bars and restaurants and also good shopping.
I would definitely recommend it !

I've not been to Hamburg but I wasn't mad on Munich. It is VERY expensive. Far more so than Berlin.

I totally understand wanting to go somewhere different but I bet you could go back to Berlin and spend another 5days there and fill them with lots of new activities

I didn't find Munich expensive. I certainly wouldn't regard it as cheap but mostly I found it fairly reasonable. It's a little cheaper than Dublin and only slightly more expensive than Berlin.

You're probably right - from your other post on this thread you sound like more of an expert on Munich than I am. I was only there a few days. But having come from Berlin the first thing that hit me was how much more affluent it was than Berlin. I didn't think there were as many cheap options in Munich as there are in Berlin, especially with regard to accommodation, but again, I was only there a few days.

you can get unlucky with accomodation in Munich if theres a trade fair on. But theres the underground which has you to town from every corner of the city in 10 to 15 minutes which means theres no reason you have to stay in the very centre - which can get pricy when theres a bit of demand.

But even for this weekend when theres a big Bayern Munich game, I see a few 3* hotels with good reviews for €50 for a double room, for a few euro more you can get a 4*. Its a bit late now, but maybe a useful tip for others thinking of coming.
Just because public transport in Dublin and Cork is crap and stops ridiculously early, doesnt mean it is in Munich. (BTW, at weekend the underground runs till 2.30am, and night busses/ trams run all night every 15minutes on main routes, and its for free on your standard day ticket - so €6 on a day ticket more than pays for itsself in savings on accomodation)

But for general food, drink and other expenses its SO much cheaper than Ireland and indeed most other places in Europe. If you go to the touristy places then you can encounter menus where the prices are pulled from their árse and with the strong dollar and sterling they get away with it, but the local places really are very reasonable.
