Budget is around the €4000-€8000 mark.
    Ideally a hatchback.
    Automatic.
    1ltr-1.2ltr.
Not a Micra as the other half wouldn't be caught dead driving one. :pac: And not a Smart car as my dog wouldn't fit in one. :D

    Suggestions?

The i10 is a great little car. Especially in automatic.

Honda Fit jap import CVT ^ Dunno if I would recommend one TBH.

Another import.. Also be wary of anything being sold on Naas Rd area

Hard enough to find a small automatic car that isn't CVT these days. CVT is more cost effective for manufacturers.

Due to CVT box? Doubt the OP is looking for a sporty ride in a sub 1.3 shopping car..

Jap insurance might be an issue, but worth a call

Automated manual is even more common and cheaper to do, I'd have a CVT over one of those alright.

Due to it being a JDM model, insurance mainly. Also seen a good few on here with issues on the gearbox where Honda or specialists can't fix them cheaply.

Is a car being a Japanese import much of an issue insurance wise? Particularly someone on a learner permit?

@ VonVix - insurance not really an issue with smaller Japanese (automatics) - I've insured my wife on a couple of imported Micras in the recent past as a named driver when she was on a learners permit. Insurance companies only load imports when they are of the more 'interesting' variety

I agree with Colm, the Yaris is a fantastic car. I often get one as a loaner when I leave my own car in for a service.

I had to cancel my insurance with 123.ie(RSA) because they refused to transfer my insurance to 1.0 automatic toyota yaris/vitz(60hp). Machine says no situation.

I would check with insurance before buying anything japanese import.

You may insure it for one way or another but it may be more expensive due to limited number of companies accepting it.

    OP,

Yaris mk1 1.3 is a good reliable car if age is not an issue.

I just bought a nissan note 1.6 automatic for my wife recently and I am impressed with package. Good spec, Easy to drive, comfortable, nippy and spacious.

They are less popular choice due to relatively larger engine so you will buy them cheaper and younger.

Yaris 1.0 has a dreadful automated manual box. Avoid, avoid avoid.
    Same story with the Corsa.

That Pixo screams ex-rental to me. Actually quite a good few small automatic cars may have been rental cars at some stage.

They are one nasty car. They're like an Aygo but without the charm.
    They're not even a Nissan. They're a badge-engineered Suzuki Alto.

    Do Fiestas come in Automatic?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Yes they do. I think they're the Durashift EST gearbox though, which is rubbish.

Seat MII 75 bhp/citigo/vw up , best automated manual I've ever driven , streets ahead of the earlier iterations (yaris/corsa) with later software they're a revelation , perky enough too and a great crash rating , they even blip the throttle in manual mode going down the gears , and can inch out of a parking space with no jerking at all, worth a try .

Pretty certain that's an ex rental.

More than likely , but I'd prefer to chance a 131 at that money than a Japanese import, or an much older Yaris08/09 . There actually a bit of crack to drive more akin to souped up comfortable Aygo.

Yes, I've had a go of one. They're surprisingly good. In a different league to an Aygo.
    They are small though.

Dealer near me had a uk import Ibiza 1.2 TSI DSG. lovely car.

That's an odd one Kerten, when we were looking at replacements for my wifes car, (she wanted another Micra) I did make sure to ask the broker if there would be any difference in premium between 'Irish' and imported models. Their answer was as I mentioned previously, no difference unless we were looking at what are deemed higher risk models. (First Ireland btw) - not meaning to derail the thread, but felt it relevant to the OPs query.

Not only a decent engine, even the ~90PS, but a excellent gearbox.

DSG7 are known to fail with burned clutches, but I guess with a light car and less powerful engine they will be ok. I'm all for it.

I wonder if they thought it might be a uk import. The Japanese micras are called March
