"DUBLIN CITY COUNCIL and Athletics Ireland have today launched a unique 5km run which will take place on the streets of Dublin to commemorate the 1916 Easter Rising.

The event will see runners take in some of the capital’s most iconic sites on Sunday, 24 April.

Starting at Mountyjoy Square at 9am, the route weaves its way from the north side of the city – via the GPO, Liberty Hall and the Four Courts – before finishing at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham.

All participants will receive a commemorative t-shirt and entry is just €10"

Looks kind of interesting... but are you supposed to carry your post-race gear with you? The finish is a long way from the start.

5 kilometers is not a long way.

Great to see this happening. Shame it's not a half marathon or longer. But hey, it's a start! I'm in.

I thought that was a fair enough question to be honest.

Looks like a very interesting one. Hopefully I'll be able to run it. I'm assuming there will be a van or whatever to transport people's gear from the start to the finish? (e.g. Jingle Bells) since to be fair there is a decent distance between them.

Like the look of this. Rare enough to get a chance to run in town. Might be a good place for a post-Boston recovery run.

Nice idea and good value. I'll probably just do it as part of my weekly long run but I'd hope they have a system in place to get people back to the start or, at the very least, to transport their gear across to the finish area.

Does anyone know the age limit to enter this please? I have a 16 year old lad wanting to do this with me.
    Thanks

When you are registering you have to confirm you are over 18 - have seen loads on questions on this on Facebook, but so far no answers. Sorry I can't be more helpful on this one.

Start time for this one has been changed to 8am as per the Facebook event. Very early start for everyone now to get there in time!

Got a mail about this earlier today. Extremely early for me. And it's not very nice that they change it after people have signed up for it. I'll still do it though as the route looks terrific

I think the last minute and confusion is in keeping with 1916.

Although someone called Eoin MacNeill has said the race is cancelled. Probably won't stop Dublin runners showing up though.

Race seems to be a bit of a mess. How are people getting to the start?

Is there any race number collection on the morning of the race does anyone know?

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 21,254 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dub13

Going to cycle in myself, or drive if its bad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,999 ✭✭✭68 lost souls

Now that there's a shuttle bus announcement I've signed up. Looking forward to it

I see a 1 mile race has been added to the event, taking place just before the main 5k race.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 159 ✭✭Run and Jump

I'll jog the few miles into town as a warm-up, then do the race, then jog home as a cool down. That'll be my Sunday-morning long run and a short race done in one go, with no messing with bag drops or shuttle buses.

Number pickup has now changed as well.

Number collection will take place at Elverys Sports, Dublin Arnotts, 12 Henry Street Dublin 1 on Thursday 20th April between 12:00 & 20:00, Friday 22nd April between 10:00 & 18:00 and Saturday 23rd April between 10:00 and 18:00.
Elverys Sports is offering all participants 20% discount off all full items in the Elverys Sports Arnotts store.
This event is designed as a run rather than a competitive race therefore it will not be chip timed. Timing clocks will be in position on both the start and finish gantries.
We are encouraging all runners to wear their commemorative T-shirt during the run.

I'm not used to driving into the city centre - does anyone know what's the story with parking? I had a look, and it seems like a lot of the multi-storey car parks don't open til later in the day.

Q Park Clerys is open 24 hours and is only about a 2 min walk to the start line.

Anyone interested in marshalling at this race?! Early hour on a Sunday morning but you get to exert power in a high vis jacket... Posting on behalf of an organiser.... PM if this sounds like fun to you

Does anyone know if there's a shuttle bus from Kilmainham back to Mountjoy Sq AND a baggage shuttle service or just one? I'd prefer to pick up my baggage at Kilmainham and go home from there but I dunno if it's an option.

Bags will be transported from the start line to Kilmainham so yeah you should be fine getting your bag there.

I got my number and T shirt today, I actually got it for a mate as well. No Q at all, in saying that I was just after 1 and I think they only started at 1.

Getting good value out of this 11 euro.

T-shirt is decent enough. Wanted a 1916.2016 souvenir. Might as well be another running top :)
20% off in Elverys was handy too cos I needed a couple of bits.

Yes it is good value alright, looking forward to the run.
11 euro is a great price considering how all other event prices appear to be sneaking up more and more in price.

It is good value, and it's nice to have tea and coffee after etc, but I'd much prefer a finish time (even just a gun time) than a t-shirt! Can't believe an AAI event isn't timed at all!

Not going, unfortunately. I had a wisdom tooth extracted earlier this week, and am still on antibiotics and painkillers, so running this would be a bad idea.

Are the t-shirts properly sized? I need a small so hopefully it is actually small.

It's small if you're a small man, big if you're a small woman:)

Great race, big turnout! Good atmosphere too! Didn't use bag drop but it seemed well-organised! and dublin bus were letting people get free buses to city centre after!

I thought twas fantastic value for €11, shame about no chip, but at the end of the day, it was nice once-off event for the day that's in it!!

Great run, was it a very fast course or just me? Have a cold at the moment and ran a PB which was great.

Couldn't figure out the shuttle buses so got the Luas back to town.

Would love it to be an anual event here.

Really enjoyed it. Lovely atmosphere throughout. It was great running along the Liffey and seeing a sea of blue t-shirts bobbing along ahead of me. Great value for €11

I really enjoyed that, great organisation and nice and chill. I was glad it wasn't chipped by the end - it kept the cost down and therefore made it more accessible, and I think a race that isn't chip timed is less intimidating to newbies which is nice and encouraging. It was billed as a run rather than a race, and you could see today from the diverse crowd that it was a good tactic.

Folks were stopping to take photos at 1916 related landmarks along the way (unfortunately some had no awareness they were in a busy crowd) and several times I saw club runners stop and offer to take a photo for a group...if the race was timed you would not get that. I availed of the bag drop and the shuttle bus and both were completely hassle free.

Thank you organisers! I would continue to run this if it was annual.

That hill at the end was nasty! I've been more used to coming down it in the Run the Liberties 6K.

Not helped by some knobheads on their way back into town afterwards riding Dublin bikes on the course across the path of the back-of-the-pack participants.

Other than that, a very good event. The singing of Amhrán na bhFiann before the start and the trad band playing at the finish were nice touches.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,595 ✭✭✭✭Murph_D

Really enjoyed it. There's too much pressure for every run to provide expensive chip timing if you ask me. Definitely room for some non timed events in the calendar!
