Move Department

    Hi,

I recently went back to college for two years to change careers to I.T because there were a lack a jobs in my field.

As part of the course we had a six month placement to complete which i got in at a big company. This is my first job in I.T. and to be honest for the first three month's i done very little.

It was doing the admin work nobody wants to do but i didn't mind to be honest. In month four i started some work but to be honest i struggled and was constantly annoying people for help.

I have got no training and i know one of the reasons is a big new contract and literally everyone is under pressure. Maybe the other reason is they wanted to see if i could be resourceful.

I.T. is not natural to me and i am finding it very tough without much help. They offered me a three month contract to assist on this project which has a few weeks to go.

To be honest i am really struggling with this at the moment and just putting my head down and hoping i can figure things out, but i know i am behind where i am expected to be.

The next few weeks will decide my future at the company and i know i am not going to be made permanent. Even if i am i don't think i will ever be comfortable with this work.

My dilemma is in another department they have posted a vacancy online for which i think is a good match for me. It would be more related to what i done in the past.

My problem is the closing date is this week and i am unsure whether to approach H.R. I know this project i am working is important and my manager won't be happy if i request to move departments.

So if i approach H.R. and they don't think i am a good fit for the other job i am basically gone in a few weeks.

Any advice on which way to approach this i am leaning towards putting my head down and trying to improve on the work i am doing.

You've nothing to lose by applying though?

I presume what little chance i have of being kept on will be gone if i apply and don't get it.

Also my manager if not happy could make the next few weeks difficult for me.

Approach hr but say you would need to see out the current project with the first department - if they think you have potential they may be willing to facilitate things.

You should consider going to your manager and asking for his/her support for the transfer. Going straight to HR may P him off.....

It is always perfectly acceptable for a temp or contract person to apply for a permanent or longer term role. Note your current manager may not like it, but consider this, if they hire externally the interview process and notice period may extend past your current finish date anyway.

As a manager I would never be offended if someone applied for such a position.

With a little horse trading, the managers in question should be able to sort it out.
