A Roman Catholic nun in the US who founded a global media empire has died aged 92.
Mother Mary Angelica, who started the Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) in a monastery garage, died at her rural monastery in the state of Alabama.

Watching the EWTN, she always came across as at times acerbic, at times humourous but always a determined person. May she rest in peace.

A huge amount of people continue to say the rosary with her daily, my mother included
I hope they keep broadcasting it, it's keeping a lot of people going
She was literally a holy terror

    RIP this fearsome Poor Clare

The local ordinary for the Alabama Station Bishop David Foley became very concerned that Mother Angelica would have an altar in the EWTN basilica which would allow the Novus Ordo Missae ad orientem or most dreadfully of all, celebrate a Tridentine Mass. He tried to forbid Mother Angelica doing anything desperate (ie anything ad orientem) and managed to get a friendly Cardinal to back his position. He tried then to see if the Poor Clares owned EWTN, which if it was the case, he would have valid jurisdiction. Mother Angelica perhaps panicked, and vested what the Poor Clares owned of the station in a corporation headed by a board of lay Catholics. This body has shown a general indifference to Mother Angelica's anti-Modernist focus. One thing which notably triggered her was a blasphemous Stations of the Cross at the 1993 World Youth Day in Denver. World Youth Day is itself a reliable source of scandal to the faithful. Now EWTN is fixedly middle of the road. Middle of the road won't do for the Catholic Church today faced with a precipitate decline in Church attendance in the West, and a horrifying legacy of scandals.

    A website here discusses this.

Yet for all this, she created something that gives comfort to some many Catholics, particularly those who are housebound.

    The report on the funeral
    "
Mother Angelica’s life must be viewed in reference to Jesus, the homilist at her funeral Mass said on Friday.

“We cannot understand Mother Angelica without reference the One that she loved with the passion of a bride, Jesus, the Eternal Word Who became man and dwelt among us,” said Fr. Joseph Mary Wolfe, MVFA, in his homily at the funeral Mass for Mother Angelica, foundress of EWTN and Abbess Emerita at Our Lady of the Angels monastery in Hanceville, Alabama.

“Her legacy is a legacy of His work in her,” Fr. Joseph Mary added.

She was a very practical person. Interesting how much power she had in the Church.
