Changing non-fibre broadband from Eir to Sky or another wholeseller

    I have a landline with Eir that I only really use for BB. The speeds is around 1.5-1.8 Mb/s. And that is all that I will be getting according to Eir, no upgrades planned and too far from any cabinet or exchange anyway..

    I can get this a bit cheaper from sky or I am sure many other providers.

    The thing is.. I have had this broadband for a long time and it is very stable, maybe had 2 issues with it during the 6 years I had it. One was caused by a faulty modem and one was caused by a problem on the line. In both cases it was fixed very quickly.

    Against everybody's opinion I started testing netflix on it and against the odds, it works (no buffering or freezing at all). I haven't tried doing netflix and other simultaneous tasks which I am sure will be a different story, but for the speed I am getting the connection is just very, very good..

    Would I jeopardise that stable and reliable connection by moving it to another provider ? Any experiences out there ?

    Nope, right now you have:

    Open Eir -> Eir -> You

    By changing you'd have:

    Open Eir -> Sky/Vodafone -> You

    In essence its a different billing system and customer care. The hardware is identical.

    The only caveat is, if you have a silver coloured Netopia(Motorola) modem then you could see a speed reduction if you're more than 4km from the exchange. This really is a nice case though.
