Chain won't stay on big ring

I have installed a new front mechanism.

The chain moves onto the big ring, but won't stay there, and just moves back to the small ring.

It is a Sora double front derailleur. The rest of the groupset is 9 speed sora.

The cable seems pretty taut to me, but maybe not taut enough.

I set the low limit screw already, and I think it's okay. However, I'm not too sure how to set the high limit screw if I can't get the chain to stay on the large ring.

Any ideas, as to whether it's the tension or the high limit screw?

    Thanks

If you pull on the cable with your finger does it stay on the big ring? If so you need more tension.

The High and Low limit screws are like Door Stops. All they do is stop the Derailleur moving past a certain point and therefor either stopping the chain falling off the small ring into the frame (low) or off the big ring (High)

You might have the H limit screw set wrong, maybe relax it off a tad and see how you get on?

There are loads of youtube videos on setting the front derailleur too.

Thanks for the replies. I don't have a light in the garage, so will have to check tomorrow if it stays when I pull the cable. I suspect that might be the problem, (although I had it as tight as I could).

I've had a look at a few of the videos. They make sense to me when watching them, but actually getting the thing to work is the issue.

I'll have another look tomorrow. Thanks again.

For some reason, front derailleurs cause me headaches. I find it tedious to get them right.

To get over my difficulty, I installed a barrel adjuster on my FD cable so I can twist it to increase or decrease tension.

It does sound like your high limit screw might need to be loosened a bit to allow the mech to travel a bit more to fully engage the chain on the big ring. Try to see if the mech is actually hitting the limit screw - if it isn't then more cable tension is the only answer. The mounting position and angle of the FD is also important.

Maybe you have the installation guide but just in case > http://www.shimano.com/media/techdocs/content/cycle/SI/SORA/SI_5GS0A_001/SI_5GS0A_001_En_v1_m56577569830614939.pdf

It'll work in a flash in the morning. Have a read of the pdf this evening and you'll wonder what the problem was tomorrow.
