Horse diet

I don't have a horsey background, so perhaps an odd question.

How long can a horse rely on a grass-only diet and remain healthy? I realise that they tend to like things like apples and oats and they have more concentrated nutrition, but are they necessary to their diets?

It depends on the grass, the soil, the pony, and the workload. There's too many variable to say for definite for every pony. Some can, some can't.

Also, apples should only be fed as treats. They aren't a part of their staple diet

This, there's a huge amount of variables involved so a yes or no answer is impossible, but in the summer I know many horses who do very light work and live out and are not fed anything other than the grass they graze so it is possible. But it depends on the horse the workload and the grass quality and availability.
