    Hi there

Started with HSE last November. Before tax pay is 419 per week. After tax pay is 334 per week. I am wondering should I be paying this much tax? I was unemployed for a few years before getting this job. I am not paying emergency tax I have checked.

    Thanks

Are you paying the pension levy?

You certainly shouldn't be paying all that in tax. I would doubt that even the pension levy would explain the disparity. I suggest calling Revenue and requesting a P21 balancing statement and they will assess whether you overpaid tax in Nov and Dec last year. If so, it will be reimbursed. If you have overpaid this year, it should be possible to get it back in your wages.

Are you married, and joint assessed? Perhaps your husband/wife has got your tax credits? Call Revenue and ask ...

what does your pay slip say?

What inform action do I need from payslip?

It should give you a breakdown of what taxes and deductions come out. Pension levy, superannuation, USC etc. Have you tried putting your details into an online calculator?

Try this one http://taxcalc.ie/budget-2016/ Select Public Servant from the dropdown in the second field

I multipled your 839.10 by 26 to get a full year which was 21,817

I filled it into this tax calculator:
    taxcalc.ie/budget-2016/

You might want to double check the details I filled in (at the bottom) or use their advanced settings.

Anyway, it says Net Income: 18,973 so I divided that by 26 to see what it thinks you should be paid for 2 weeks work and it came to: 729.73 and that's almost 60 more than you are getting.

On that basis, I'd say get in touch with Revenue, contact details here:
    http://www.revenue.ie/en/contact/index.html

They'll be able to run through it with ya and see if they can sort ya out.

Not sure if it's the same for the public service but the Civil Service use 26.09 fortnights in a year or 52.18 weeks when calculating salaries. Accounts for leap years

OP, do you have any previous debt to Revenue, which they might be collecting from you now?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,663 ✭✭✭wench

You should have tax credits for the year of €3300, made up of €1650 PAYE credit, and €1650 Personal credit.
Looking at the excess tax paid, I'd say you only have one of them.

As said above, call Revenue and they'll sort it out.

Thank you yes I done it myself and it says I should be getting more money.

No Mrs o bumble I have no debt to repay. I had been unemployed for a number of years before getting this job. I thought I should be allowed to earn so much before I was paying any tax as I was unemployed.

The tax credits are use them or lose them, they don't carry over from year to year.
The year you started back working you would have a full year of credits, and are probably due a refund. Ask Revenue for a balancing statement when you are talking to them.

Does it not list tax credits and a tax cut off point?

As a single CO you should be getting 364 a week at the moment if your TFA is used up for this year, if not around 382 until it is. A simple call to Revenue will sort this out.
