Odd development, though I'm not sure it's where the Premier League games will go. In fact I'd be suprised to see any Premier League on it at all, save maybe the odd "taster" game at the start and odd points of the season.

As a "taster"/"shop window" channel, I'd say programming will be scheduled so that you get for example, Thursday's of golf tournaments, opening games of competitions, that sort of things. Enough to hook you so you want Sky Sports, not enough to disincentivise you from taking a package.

I wouldnt expect to see the 3pm games on this at all tbh.

A definite taster for a full sports subscription.
Sky already had three live NFL games on Pick tv this season, a great advertising for subscribing.

Could possibly be a little like BT Showcase on freeview showing a second class level of interest sporting events in soccer.

Some Premier League on it alright, so Sky say, but I still reckon it will be only the odd match.

If they do use this channel and have an opt out and show Saturday's 3pm games in Ireland and only make them available to Sky Subscribers then this wont go down well with Virgin Media, eir,Vodafone etc.

Not surprised they've started giving it away....outside of the Premiership and F1 what have they got

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,587 ✭✭✭Berty44

I have it mainly for golf and the NFL !

Everyone has different taste in sport. I don't think this thread is a place for that sort of wider debate

I don't think they'll go down that road. Very early on when BT got the rights, it was made clear to them by the Premier League that it would not be acceptable to limit access to BT Vision subscribers. I'm pretty sure Sky would be in the same boat. As it happens I don't think they'll use this channel for the 3pms at all - I think they'll be on whichever channel is simulcasting Soccer Saturday (currently Sky Sports 5).

In fact, I wonder if this could replace Sky Sports 5? They don't have enough content for the channels they do have at the moment.

Sky are really diluting out their sports channels

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 17,070 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzo

they could start looking at their Sky Movies service first which has been stale since the early 2000s and totally overpriced for what it is.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,072 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

I would be surprised if the linear Sky Movies service lasts any more than another 2-3 years tbh, that will likely transition to a full VOD service. (I am not sure why the NVOD Sky Movies Box Office is still running tbh - surely it can't be making much money and Sky could do with freeing up the EPG slots it uses).

But that's a totally different discussion.

Sky TV should give up Sky Movies to Netflix or Amazon Prime

The savings could be redirected to their Entertainment channels and sport channels

Sky should allow Netflix apps and amazon prime apps to be part of their catch up like netflix is available on freesat freetime+

maybe we can sticky what Sky should do.
Would save you from repeating yourself.

Maybe they'll show guys playing FIFA...

Likely a taster channel, they did similar with one sky one before ,the odd prem game midweek, and winning post.Regarding 3pm Saturday football, can't be shown in UK for legal reasons, so unlikely it'll be shown over here

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,072 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

They have won the rights to show 32 Saturday 3pm and 1 Sunday 3pm games in Ireland only starting in August.

I hope Sky Ire won't be affected by bizarre fixture choices like not showing Liverpool/ MUFC live games but showing other games of no interest

I did specify UK rather than Ireland, this already exist under Setanta, it's going to be messy if there are Irish & UK versions & especially for Northern Ireland, will they be allowed access 3pm kickoffs as they aren't part of mainland UK where will Setanta/BT stand ? Who knows at end of day as said in other posts golf teasers , lower prem games, etc prob the staple, get the punter hungry for more. What amazes me the rights to 3pm kickoffs Bein , MSNExtra, to name but two, but this side of pond ... money talks I suppose

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,072 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

It's not a problem(except for Setanta, who have a large 3pm spaced hole in their Saturday afternoon schedule). All the Sky Sports channels already have the ability to opt out for the Republic of Ireland for advertising. NI won't be included, the IFA have invoked the UEFA blocked hours regulations which means no football can be shown in NI (same as in England and Scotland) on Saturdays at 3pm. It's just the Setanta package moved to Sky.

That what it seems. That must be some sort of record, for a broadcaster to be told it's losing the rights one week into a three year deal. Never thought I'd see the day F1 would be almost totally gone from FTA (although there will be coverage of the British Grand Prix) but obviously Sky's coverage over the last couple of seasons has obviously convinced Bernie that the sponsors don't care as much as was thought.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,841 ✭✭✭lertsnim

Casual viewers don't care either now that Formula 1 is a one team contest for the championship.

It's thanks to Sky buying out the F1 that I discovered the wonderful world of 13° and 19° and Radio 5 live;)

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,072 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

Just to maybe take this back to Sky Sports Mix, part of the deal announcement is that at least two Grands Prix (not being the British Grand Prix) will be on Sky Sports Mix each season.

Sky Sport Mix will be watched in my house as it will show live the non British/Irish World cup qualifiers from Sep 2016.
ITV4 will show the first choice of these live games on freesat

What's the story there I wonder? Isn't Sky F1 free for Sky customers anyway, in the same way that Sky Sports Mix will be?

Not in the UK any more. You now have to take Sky Sports there to get Sky Sports F1, unless you already have it from way-back-when.

Oddly enough Sky never made a corresponding change in Ireland. You do have to take HD though, if you are not taking Sky Sports.

Ah, I was wondering about that. I have it, never watch it. Must be because I have HD...

I assume it would be, all Sky Sports channels are in HD

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,072 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

I believe so, though Sky have been quiet nough on that front, there is an FAQ about Sky Sports Mix on the UK site that does mention HD.

This is a 'teaser' channel, designed to get people to fork out for the full package. It will definitely be in HD.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 17,070 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzo

I think Sky 2 is the only sky branded channel that's not in HD.

Wonder will they show any of the summer GAA championship games or will they still be on the pay stations?

"this summer" is all we know. I'd guess sometime between June and August.

Any word on whether it is likely to be included in the Entertainment Pass on NowTV?

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,072 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

As I understand it, it won't be on Now TV (which isn't available here) at all - it will be exclusive to Sky Digital customers. Sky are seeing it as a way of attracting people to Sky Digital, as they've done with Sky Atlantic and (in Ireland) Sky Sports F1.
