Hey I'm thinking of getting an Audi A4 over summer ideally 2004 but I will only have the money to get 2002 so most likely 2002 unless I see a very cheap 2004 one. Just wondering are the 1.6 releiable, how are they on petrol? Before ye say get the 1.9 diesel one I can't because I'm only 21 so the insurance would kill me. Would there be a noticeable power difference between the 1.6 and my current 1.2? Thank you!

There will be more power but before you do anything get quotes for insurance. Your age and the age of the car plus the fact its a vag could put it fairly expensive

400 more to insure and 170 more to tax, would the power difference be massive? As of now I have to do hills in 2nd and overtake in 2nd only if there isn't an oncoming car for a good while hahaha come summer I'll be 22.

You can use 123.ie to give you accurate quotes.
As for power a test drive will give you a feel for it.

If you're going petrol the 1.8T is an alternative, again 123.ie will give you an idea of costs. Be aware that premiums on cars around 2002 are going up based on their age, only slightly but some places may not quote on a 2002.

I have a 2002 1.8T and it is very reliable once it gets regular oil changes every 6K miles, this prevents the main problem with these engines which is the oil pick up blocking with sludge.

I would want to get the 1.8 but the insurance and the tax is too high for me to afford

The 1.6 litre in that model A4 is a real dog. Might be a bit quicker than what you're driving now but that doesn't mean it's better.

It will be more powerful than your 1.2 for sure. But don't expect fireworks. In a few years, work on getting something a bit more powerful. After 25yo, your insurance will start to drop, and you will have a few more years experience.

The 1.6 is a reliable enough engine, its been used for years by VAG but it being an AUDI, factor in some hefty repair costs if stuff goes wrong, unless you are handy with the spanners and can source good second hand parts.

I've had no problem with my current car (first car) for the last two years I just want something a little more pokey and I love audis somethings till I finish college in 3 years!

1.6 engine gets a bad rep. It's a workhorse, very reliable and powerful enough for everyday driving needs. A comfy car, cruises nicely. Newer 1.6 engine has more 'bells' and injector 'whistles' but also plenty more to go wrong. Good luck with your new car :)
