So six weeks out from the big day I've decided I want to wear a veil after all! I don't know what length would suit my dress and I haven't left enough time to visit bridal shops to figure it out-anyone got any experience of getting veils altered? I've found a plain tulle cathedral length one online that I'd be happy with, surely it wouldn't be overly complicated to shorten it if needs be? It doesn't have edging or anything so I imagine it's only matter of carefully cutting it shorter?

You can get one online very cheap. U don't need an appointment in most bridal shops just for a veil. Im getting one made but only cause my dress is an uncommon colour

Yup that's why I'm wondering about alterations, the cathedral length one I've seen is €30 but I'm wondering how big a job it would be to get it shortened if I want to!

I'd say it would be easy enough for them. I know alot of dress makers make veils so shouldn't be an issue for them. I'd say you'd get an elbow length veil for around that price though to save u the hassle.
Smart brides in portlaoise have some veils that length on their website available to order for 45
But they are a bridal boutique so probably on the dearer end

If you don't want any edging then it should be no bother to cut to size. I bought a veil online (from Adverts) and I cut off one of the (four) layers, removed the ribbon edging and hot-glued on some rhinestones. I was very happy with the result.

Any dressmaker will sort out a veil for you. I bought material online and my dressmaker (that was altering my dress anyway) put a comb in it for me.

Just a note on long veils, my wedding hairdresser warned me they ruin your hair coz of the weight of them, people including yourself keep standing on them or getting caught on stuff, every time that happens it pulls and drags at your hairstyle so if having your hair down the curls could be pulled out of it etc.

I had a short veil and I still found it was pulling and dragging off my hair, you forget it's there and it keeps getting caught in between your back and a chair etc. But if you want that cathedral length look for photos fair enough!

That never even crossed my mind. Good to know though thanks!

Happens even with shorter veils :o Mine was just below shoulder and every time someone put their arm around me it would feel like my whole head was stuck back and I couldn't bend it forward without asking to pull up a bit of the veil from under the hand or arm.

About sorting out your veil, as mentioned any good seamstress should be able to do a simple veil for you or give it a border. You can gather up the material yourself and sew onto a comb or hair clip, as long as the outside of it looks neat enough. I imagine any Bridal shop would also be delighted if you got a veil off them even if you didn't get a dress there. All you'd need is a swatch of your material or if you already know the colour, just pop in and ask for a white/ivory/champagne cathedral or whatever length veil. They're bound to have a big enough selection.

I got a simple one made for 65 euro with little pegs to stick in my hair. Was so handy as easily removed.
