Hello everyone. I finally had Eir installed to my house today. (Just Internet) They seem to be busy as it took two weeks to get an installation date.Sadly, I believe ive come across a fault already. When the engineer finished up his work he told me that when the globe picture lit up then I would have internet. He was correct, but on wired and wifi the speeds are the same. Im getting about 11mb down and 0.8mb up. It doesnt go any higher or lower. It is very odd. Any ideas on what to do? I'd be very grateful if you did.

    Thanks again!

What did you sign up for? What were you expecting? DSL goes as low as 0.5Mb.

It depends on what speed you signed up for doesn't sound like you are on eirfibre given the upload speed of the connection.

Can you log into your router and post the attenuation statistics?

Where could I find these figures?

Up to 100mbit, the package it's sold as "up to". The technology uses the existing copper network and depends on the distance you are from the cabinet/exchange. Right next to it you will get 100mbit, more than 2km away you will get nothing. Posting the stats from the modem will tell the full story

I'm not an eir customer so I can't say for certain, but try these links:
    http://192.168.0.1
    http://192.168.0.254
    http://192.168.1.1
    http://192.168.1.254
One of them should hopefully give you a log-in page. I would expect the admin ID and password would be written on a label on the bottom of the router. If not, others on here should be able to advise.

Once you are logged into the router have a look around for "Statistics". We need the attenuation figures.

Where are you seeing 11.5 mbps?

Just want to be sure you are seeing the bits and not the bytes.

A 100MBits connection would give a transfer rate of 12.5 MBytes a second.

I think he said a speed test

I've reread all his posts and he doesnt mention. Even if it is a speed test, we still need to establish whether he is seeing bits or bytes.

Hmm, I was just onto the Eircom Live Now chat system. I was told that they were capping my internet and that it has now been changed. The Eir cabinet is within 200 metres of the house. But they told me they can only give us 50 down and 10 up, because we are too far away... We were not informed of this at any point.

    Disappointing to say the least:

Thanks for your replies so far!

Telephone cables don't go in straight lines and get curled up in the manholes. 50-10 is still a very usable connection.

If you get us the Attenuation figures, we should be able to find out how long your line actually is and what speeds you should be able to attain.

At 200m (or thereabouts) you should be getting closer to the 100Mbps figure. As others have said, the line could take a more lengthy route however.

    Attenuation Figures = 18.1 dB/ 39.3 dB
    Finally figured it out!

That gives a line length of ~1,300m with a max speed of ~24Mbps.

I'm not sure how they said they can give you a maximum of 50Mbps down based on that result.

Can you run a www.speedtest.net and tell us what the results are?
