Painful crown

    Hi all,

I had a crown fitted on a bottom molar 3 weeks ago, its my first and I was wondering does it need time to "settle"?
I'm no longer very aware of the feel of it in my mouth but it's still quite painful to chew with and extremely sensitive to hot and cold. I had hoped it would be just like a new tooth but I wouldn't dream of chewing anything hard with it, the hardest I've tried is apple and it hurts.

I'm worried about causing excessive wear and tear on the teeth on the other side as I've been chewing on that side for years (whilst putting off this crown!) and now I still am.

For those of you with crowns, is it usually like this or can you forget you have it and eat normally? If this is as good as its going to get I wouldn't have wasted the money and just had it pulled instead!

Any advice/ similar experiences appreciated. Thanks in advance!

The most common problem that causes the things you discribe is that it is "high" in the bite. This will often settle by itself but other times it needs some adjustment to the crown or a filling in the tooth above. Seek advice from your treating dentist.

The other issue could be to do with the nerve in the tooth or a crack in the tooth. Less common however.

Yes the crown should be comfortable and you should not be aware of them.

Seek remedial treatment with your dentist.
