Lads looking at a replacement car at the moment and checking out a 2008 passat with the 2.0 tdi engine, how prevalent was the dodgy pump at that stage, still something to be concerned about? It's not the the cr engine, which came out later that year, it's the PD.

Looking to spend about 6k on something for the family 2+3 fairly tall kids and adults, reasonable tax is OK.

I would say that a 5-6k 08 Passat will be one of the worst examples.

Thats what I thought myself, hence the post here. Anything to look out for.

    Clutch flywheel are done

    Timing belt done

Anyway.. if anyone has any non pretentious information to help me with the purchase it would be very helpful.

Check to see if there is history of the injectors been replaced. Those give problems on the 2.0 PD TDi engine, VW replaced them for free under a recall a few years back. Also check if the oil pump balance shaft has been replaced, it's a very common problem on that particular engine in the Passat and if it fails it can be expensive to fix. Other things to watch out for is failing electronic parking brake, issue is common on that year Passat and can range from just a faulty button to a sticking brake caliper.

But imo unless the car has had most of these things done and in mint condition I'd try and find a car with the more refined CR unit.

Has the injectors done and recorded in the service book.

Does not have the clutch and flywheel recorded but been told it's been done. Timing belt was done and recorded.

The only thing is it has a brand new engine cover, plastic is still on the emblem but there is a lot of thick dust in and about corners of the engine bay. Also seems to be a bit of play in the gearbox when in gear.

looking at a cmax now also, 1.6tdci

This is an absolute nightmare but we are looking for opinions on these cars.

    Renault Grand Scenic

    V

    Kia Carens

The scenic is really cool for the kids, and ticks all the boxes, but my head says stay away, we would be on our third French car and each previous one has been a disaster. Which is why we went looking for alternatives, and ended at the carens, it does not have all the bells and whistles of the scenic, but we would be happy to trade them for long term reliability.

There has to be some middle ground...
That Kia model came out in 08 IIRC so is quite an old model.
The 2.0 engine and gearbox combo is likely shared with the Tucson and old Sportage.

What about a Toyota Verso/Corolla Verso?
I know the Corolla verso is an even older model again, but they don't feel it.

FWIW, The newer grand scenic isn't supposed to be bad at all.

Have you considered a Skoda Roomster? I know they are not beauty queens, but they have massive carrying capacity and a raised back seat with large windows so the kids can see out.

You might also want to do a bit research on the place selling that Kia, doesn't get the kindest of reviews around here.

That would be a lot smaller that the Passat the OP first mentioned.

Am shopping for something very similar to what the OP is asking for.

    That Scenic looks lovely.
