What does a seller need to give you at time of private sale?

Hi there. I am buying a car in cash and the seller has requested to meet in the bank. I will be taking the cash to the bank and be paying for the car in full. What do I need the owner of the car to give me besides the keys and the car? I have never purchased a vehicle in Ireland so don't know the procedure for change of ownership. Does he have to give me the form and do I mail it or does he have to do that? Also, is there anything else I may need from him or anything else I should keep in mind?

    thank you!

Make sure you see the VLC and it is in the sellers name.
The seller wanting to meet in the bank is a good thing imo.

Sign the VLC, put your details on it and post it there and then.
I always bring a blank envelope with a stamp on it, so that it can be posted there and then.

    Make sure to get :

    Keys
Any documentation, service history, NCT certs etc
you'd be surprised the amount of people that keep this paper work separate to the cars history etc

Ask him beforehand if he has both Keys and to make sure he brings both with him on the day.
The peace of mind from having a spare key is priceless.....well, anywhere from €200 to €500 anyway.

As Kceire says try to make sure you see him physically post the VLC. You can check when it's received by the authorities on motortax.ie

Sending log book/ Vlc is freepost.

Take a photo of both sides of document when filled out and both go to post box and see its actually put in.

I would only meet at bank afrter you have met at their house and have gotten a mechanic to look car over even if nct is on it always play it safe.

Do not part cash until car is in your grasp and have the keys.

Do not go alone especially if large amount of cash.

Do a nct check to make sure nct isn't actually due as there are fakes.

    Do motorcheck or cartell online.

If it was me as another measure I would ask to see some photographic ID from them to confirm they are the registered owner of the car. Driving licence or passport would be fine. Meeting at the bank is a good idea from their and your point of view especially if it's a large sum of money.

I understand why from their point of view, but why from mine?

Do you think asking for a photocopy of their ID and drivers license is necessary?

does this mean that I pop it into a lope and send without any stamp just with the address on it. does it matter who posts it?

The Seller is supposed to post it...rather than hand it over to you and let you do it.
But there is nothing to stop you asking them to stick it into a post box while you are there.

Oh OK because he is offering to give it to me to post it. I suppose that is the same thing though

The reason the seller posts it is so you don't hold on to it and keep driving the car while car is in their name (m50 tolls, fines, blah).
You can both post it together outside the bank of course.

During a private sale everything is "as is" so whatever you drive away with is yours. Make sure you have all keys, service history etc.

Have you had the car checked by a mechanic. Its too early to be thinking of where to post the Reg Cert, if you haven't fully checked the car and its owner.

What happened to the old-fashioned purchase contract?
