Not sure where to put this so forgive me if this isn't the right part.

The girlfriends 2008 Qashqai is going for the NCT at the end of the month, she was thinking of putting 4 new tyres on for the test.

What are good reliable brands for that vehicle, wouldn't want to spend more then 80-100 per unit, cars wouldn't really be my thing but I have looked around at some tyres online and can't seem to set my mind on any one in particular.

I can fit them for her alright, she was thinking it might be cheaper to orer some tyres online and have me put them on the car but would she be better off just taking them to a tyre place and getting whatever one they have on offer for her price range anyway?

    Thanks in advance

Out of curiosity, how are you going to fit them on her car yourself?

Two dessert spoons and you're sorted.

Original tyres were probably Bridgestones or Continental, just ask for them, if they seem too costly then drop down from premium brands to next cheapest, what size tyres are they anyway?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,499 ✭✭✭✭Alun

What size wheels are they? I have 16" wheels on mine, size is 215/65R16, and last time I went for Hankook Dynapro HP2 (sometimes called RA33). It's a slightly unusual size so there's not a massive choice, but I'm very happy with the Hankooks. The tread looks a little more grippy and less blocky (yes, scientific, I know!) than the Bridgestone Dueler Sport's that were on it before.

I think the previous posters are wondering how you will get the old tyres off the alloys and fit the new tyres onto the alloys and maybe also put balance weights on them etc.
Do you have the equipment to do this?

Tyre recommendation from me is Uniroyal, I always say that :D

Sledge hammer, angle iron and a buckrake tooth or 2

Reef the valve off and bull the new one up with a vice grips

Bate the tyres and weights off and on with a ball hammer

    Good 65psi in each wheel

    Sorted! :p

I'll call a spade a spade and ask you what others are just hinting here: you don't think the tires will come already mounted on wheels/rims, do you?

Because they don't. You only get the round rubber rings, you need to take the old tires off the rim and put the new ones on - it's a job that requires a high amount of brute force and precision at the same time, so much that there are machines that do it. I apologize if I sound patronizing, but from your post it looks like you don't have an exact idea about the concept of "fitting them yourself".

If the..."thing"...is the 1.5 DCi as I suspect, it mounts 215/65 R16s, which are a fairly common tire. Good brands (Goodyear, Bridgestone, Continental etc) should come within your 80-100 euro price range.

My brother has a quashqui and he recently bought 2 part worn Powertrac tyres on it for the princely sum of €50 for the lot from some place in the Glen in waterford. They look like fine tyres, loads of thread on them.

I wouldn't be paying big money for tyres, at the end of the day they are all manufactured to a standard and the budget ones are no different.

Are the tyres actually worn out? If theres enough thread on them to pass an NCT then why bother changing?
I managed to get my old car through NCT with the wire out through a back wheel one time a few years ago.

Seconding the Uniroyal recommendation, every yard I've spoken to has said they're the best value.

Indeed, thread would be a clear indicator that the textile belt was showing! :D The only thing worse would be of the tyres were rusting due to the steel belts showing.

    Great attitude that.

p.s. Tyres vary greatly in quality. Good ones can save you, your passengers, and 3rd parties whereas poor ones will limit your vehicles ability to stop and change direction to avoid a potential accident.

Skimping on tyres brakes and supension is pretty unwise at best.

    I ordered 4 215/70 R16 for my wifes car a little over a week ago from Tyreleader.ie.

I was just checking prices on line when I ran across Tyreleader. I took a look at the prices, then checked the delivery options, found a local tyre supplier listed, went down to his premises and had a chat with him where he said yes not a bother, 10 euro a wheel and theres a bunch of tyres just in from Tyreleader for other customer. Heres how it went:
    • Thursday - Check Tyreleader prices.
    • Thursday - Check delivery and fitting options.
    • Thursday - Call down to listed local tyre supplier to verify no issues and pricing per wheel.
    • Friday - Order 4 x tyres from Tyreleader.
    • Friday - Notified tyres shipped from NL.
    • Weekend - Track tyre shipment progress.
    • Monday - Tyre shipment in Ireland depot.
    • Tuesday - Tyre shipment out for delivery.
    • Tuesday - 14:00 Call from the local Tyre Seller that they have arrived.
    • Thursday morning tyres fitted, balance, new valves for 10 euro each.
    • Thursday - Wife happy with new boots!
Very happy with the service overall. Delivery direct to the local Tyre supplier.

Wow tyre leader is like the encyclopedia of makey uppy tyre brands.

King Meiler Sport 1 re treads ftw.

They do have real brands too in fairness.

Put any brand of tyre you want on it, they're all the same, cheap or expensive.
The only difference is the manufacturers advertising (brainwashing) budget ;)

For sure, just kept up neck for neck there with a maserati at the traffic light gp with the sailuns on me dacia sandero. Yer man was disgusted that he had been duped by those Italians and their crafty marketing. They're all the same underneath like, 4 wheels engine, all basically the same principles like.

    Lol

Need 4 225/50/17 98 xl tyres. Currently have hankooks and while OK I'd like to try something different. Being on a few online sites and Oponeo seem to have good prices. Problem is when I search for brands like Good Year, Bridgestone, etc I get a long list of tyres under each brand which seem identical but with varying prices. Difficult to know which to go for. Can anyone advise what's the best model of the following brands so I could narrow down search - Good Year, Bridgestone, Continental & Hankoks. Thanks

If you are not tyre savvy, only buy tyres that are A or B rated in the wet.

Every letter after that results in a 1 car length LONGER to stop from 60mph.

Ireland is cool and wet, get an All Season Tyre if you plan to only use one in the year. Bridgestone A001.

I have the Michelin Cross climates on now, hard to fault, very quiet and amazing wet performance.
I am sold on quality All-seasons for Ireland.

    +1 for all seasons.

I've been running All Seasons since winter of 2009 or 2010, most significant difference was the increase in traction under heavy acceleration and braking on cold dry main roads.

I was not terribly impressed with the Vredstein all seasons; too winter/snow focused for Ireland. The Falcon All Seasons are grand though they don't seem as good in the snow as I remember the Hankooks being. I'll be back to the Hankooks on the next change.

Good quality all seasons are perfect for Irish roads, but we normally only notice when having to slam on to avoid crashes, as my Summer vs All Season on cold dry winter road test showed me.

I drive 30 plus thousand miles in every year on all roads in all weather conditions and for me it's either uniroyal or continental, contis at the moment as I had a scare in the wet where a guy pulled out in front of me and the tyres stuck to the road like glue.

+ 1. I got them last year and found performance across a range of conditions excellent.

Makes a nice change from bothering to put on winter tyres for a few months when you may only encounter appropriate conditions less than 10 times in a year.
I do find them to be a bit loud though.

Definitely sticking with them for the next set of tyres.

I had Nokian Weatherproof before and I think they are quieter, much the same in terms of grip and price.

Probably worth considering all season in the future but currently I have a set of winters on steels which will do me for a couple of more winters. Agree with comment that you should stick to A or B wet rated tyres but I would love to know if there is a specific model of say Goodyear or Continental brand tyres that are currently best for the 225/50/17 xl size?

Missed the part that you can't login to their website. Just create another account or login via Facebook and create a support ticket and refer to your order number

    ==================
you can contact their customer service in their website and refer to order number they sent you via e-mail.

I recently ordered four tyres from them and they haven't been shipped for a week(website says it may take up to 7 days).

Contacted them and they followed up efficiently.

Tyres were shipped but stucked somewhere on courier's side. They shipped four more tyres immediately instead of waiting to find lost batch. Then first batch has been found and 8 tyres were shipped to tyre fitting place :D

They asked me to refuse one of the batches and happy days. I work in e-commerce myself and I find them efficient in meaning of handling a customer problem.

Hi, Did you get the tyres you ordered?

Exactly the same thing is happening to me, I ordered tyres on friday the 11th, i got an email with my order but nothing since. I did manage to send them an email by contacting them via the Commercial service option but as yet no response after almost a day. If i dont hear anything in the next day or two i will ring the bank.

First time to try tyreleader because they were 3 euros cheaper than oponeo. Last time i'll use them. Been using oponeo for the past few years, most ive had to wait is 7 days and the least was 5!
