I personally think the styling is way ott. Just not my bag.

Theyve lost the plot in the styling department.

Looks like it was designed by a 18 year old Halfords employee. And for the price of it you could buy a Focus that will kick its vtec!!Or a golf for €9,000 less that will kick it too.

Is't the Type R pumping out around 300bhp now?

It's nearly €5k more expensive than the Golf R here. In UK the Civic is £3k cheaper. Here's a Top Gear test, the Golf R leaves it for dead...

I can't post a link but search for "auto express honda civic type r bmw m3 Audi rs3"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,159 ✭✭✭Tenzor07

I've only seen one in a showroom, none on the road...

I think the styling is like the new Focus RS, and is probably designed to appeal to the middle-aged, mid-life crisis group, looking for a nice toy to drive around at the weekend...

It's totally against the spirit and fun of the original, small, minimal, lightweight, chuckable car, not the fastest car out there, but certainly the most fun and bullet-proof, easily modifiable too...

Looks to be a capable car but Focus RS or Golf R all day for me. Civic is a mess!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,757 ✭✭✭Phil.x

The golf R is very desirable and it's value should hold well.

But I could never buy a Ford! A Ford!!!

Of courses it's quicker from a dig, 4WD and automatic gearbox is a huge advantage, you would want to be a pro driver to get the Civic with 300bhp and fwd to compete.

From a rolling start the Civic should be quicker.

Look at it this way, it will be more difficult for iffy type r wannabes to make a standard one look like a type R now. There is so much cosmetic differences now where as years ago it was a subtle body kit therefore easy to replicate.

Anyways I don't like the styling on that type R at all, it really looks abit too fast n furious movie style crap. Layers and layers of bits stuck on to it.

Exactly why they looked so much better IMO

if looking short term then golf, but longterm honda will hold its value way past 10yrs,where golfs are prone to so many issues and general pain in the a$$,when it comes to repair costs-engine alone on civics are well beyond recognized and little done over the years on vtec.

Where VW keeps developing more complex engines in turn making it more expensive when crap happens-well at least that was my experience with mk4-even thou i still adore looks of mk4 r32,also styling on golfs is like BMW it barely changes just more refined, while you can notice some great differences on R model,if getting most extras-its more comfy, lots of electronics to keep one happy, where honda is more like bare bones inside.

So while seen r model and standard golf-one makes turn your head for a moment while standard is just meh, nothing to look at.

but given that were speaking of sports cars its really up to person whos buying it,as said ford is just no go,yet many choose them-golf r guess has more appeal as it isnt so provoking-can still be seen as everyday family car, where civic would be more like - flashy boy racer type choice-altough have agree first new type r was something new on the market when it came out was it 2010-8,but seems they went worse with design withing each new model.

This picture shows everything that's wrong with the Type-R. The spoiler and additional spoilers elements lower down look awful and those wheel arches... I mean it nearly looks like it left the factory floor without them being integrated properly onto the original Civic shell.

Honda for the engine, handling and performance you can't fault them, but their styling/aesthetics department need to be removed and replaced, badly.

Autocar magazine have a video and the type R is faster than a new M3 and Audi RS3 around a track they use.

^^ have to agree looks a bit of GTR knock off style, front brake fenders and back ones sticking out, seems like wheels are almost too small, surely youd need wider tires if going by picture.Spoiler seems totally skewing drivers view, put window tint and you wont be to see anything, simply sticking short one over the rear top would done job way better.

Then again once it comes to customization-as said shouts out flashy racer car,but few mods and it could look decent-as will happen once its starts aging.

Only difference is picking one after 5 years or so,since many usually dont bother doing proper service, and civics are forgiving where say buying second hand golf you need to know every ding dong or proper mechanic to,find out expenses one might be facing.

I wouldn't be a fan of the type r either as it's the end of true type r's in my opinion, gone are the days of roaring little hatchbacks like the absolutely brilliant ek9 however this new type r is an excellent car in its own respect and probably better than a golf r. A standing start drag race is the only scenario that the golf r beats the type r. From a roll the type r has it and in longer drag races it supposedly wins as well. In every track both cars have raced on the type r has come out on top by margins usually close to 1 second the only place they're similar is the Hockenheim short track however there's still 0.10 of a second in it. The type r prototype did the ring in 7:50.63 now granted this isn't an official time and ya can be sure honda had race spec tyres and other upgrades on it but I can't see a golf r beating that time.
The type r's styling is ott and like always the germans have got the looks on the r just right but apart from that the type r is a better car it's close but it's still coming out on top. The 2016 focus rs is the one to watch with 345bhp and awd I can see it topping the poles.

I have owned several type R's (3 x DC2, 1 x EK9, 1x CL1 Accord Euro R, 1 x EP3) and I have to say I'm so disappointed by the new model. I don't know who it is supposed to appeal to, it's far too expensive for younger drivers and far to garish for old mature drivers (who may be in a position to afford one) The wheels are hideous and the kit is OTT however a nice set of silver or gunmetal wheels would probably tone it down to an acceptable level. It's not something I'd ever see myself driving.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,757 ✭✭✭Phil.x

I wonder how many they will sell here within a year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,532 ✭✭✭JohnBoy26

The original is still the best imo. The facelift ek9 is one of the nicest civics ever made. Here is a facelift. It's not tacky like the newer ones and unlike later type R's it has proper suspension all around.

Simply grotesque-looking to my eyes. Probably the ugliest new car I can recall seeing in recent times. . . . But then I think Audis look good. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,381 ✭✭✭vintagevrs

The worst thing on it for me is the arches. On the performance model of some manufacturers they lower the car/flare the arches/widen the track etc. But they way they look stuck on is terrible on that Civic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 302 ✭✭Brasso

I did see one in Dun Laoghaire last week, it looks better in the metal than in photos but it was dark when I seen it. I suppose it's more impressive when you know what it's capable of, has a top speed of 167 mph so it could go faster than almost anything on Irish roads. I was surprised to see one though, I can't see them selling too well here vs the Golf R.

That Civic looks like a tacky mess, its like they're trying to appeal to boy racers who could never afford them.

The RS looks a lot better and understated compared to this....

The rs looks a bit tacky too, although not as a much as the civic. The Golf on the otherhand is decent looking with subtle styling.

If you're that boring just get the base model then. Not like you would use the improved performance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,381 ✭✭✭vintagevrs

I think it's great that Honda have the balls to go over board on the civic styling, I still think it looks like ****e though. The golf is the other extreme being plainer than the gti in many peoples eyes. Focus somewhere in between. Each to their own and all that when it comes to which you prefer.

Is there a reason for posting stuff like this? Looking for a rise just is it? ?:)

    Don't get butthurt.

I'd rather see some variety in the cars on the road. Everyone is a conformer these days.

That's what I like about them, the subtly. The Golfs styling is conservative but with a hint of class about it. That's what sets it apart from the others imo.

The type R is an attention grabber.

    The vw is a golf.

Good power and AWD but Class?....its a golf, common as muck.

Not what I meant at all. It maybe common but it's design is subtle with some nice touches to it. I Don't know why it's design should be judged on how common it is anyway.

There's no air of sophistication about a golf. It's the plebs' car.

Nothing wrong with them as cars, but they're dull.

A golf is a sedentary A to B mobile which is grand for Mary doing a spot of shopping of a Tuesday. Added points if it's silver, missing hubcaps and has a Padre Pio sticker.

Not a patch on a Type R Civic.

You'd know the type R is not your normal car when standing beside it and even the untrained would of heard about this car before it was released and in so would seek the attention it so demands.
