    Hi

Looking to buy a vaccum cleaner, just want one that's reliable, we dont have any pets etc. would be used for general household hoovering and hoovering the car i.e nothing major.

Our last vaccum was a Vax bag less one and to be honest, it looked nice, but I spent half me time cleaning the bloody thing, very dusty job etc.

So im thinking of going back to a bagged vaccum cleaner.

    can anyone recommend one?

    EDIT: Budget = 150 Euro

    Buy this Nilfisk.
It's expensive but you will get many years of service out of it.

Expert electrical are doing the Miele Complete C2 Powerline for €129.
Great suction, you can get the bags 6 for €10 with filters, and they're big enough bags too.
I might go through a bag a month. Way less hassle than the bagless one I had before.
Soundstore do them for a similar price.

+1 on the Miele. They're a great vacuum cleaner. Their after-sales care is superb too.

Thanks Colm. Yeah, I want to move away entirely from bag less, they are just too much hassle and I spent half me time cleaning them.

Miele looks good, only thing is the colour, bit bright.

They do them in other colours, but they're more expensive, my one says "celebration" on the box, so maybe they were celebrating something and went a bit mad with the colour.
I quite like the yellow tbh, but soundstore do them in a dark red for €159 delivered if it's a thing.

    Thanks again.

Are Miele a reliable brand name ?

Miele are seemingly one of the best vacuum cleaners ever. And will last a long time. If you google them you will find lots of good reviews.

We have one over 25 years old and it's still going strong. Built like a battleship.

Traditionally, Miele would have been sold on the basis of quality and durability. As with all things nowadays, you'll find manufacturers building things down to a price. Certainly with the cheaper Miele stuff, they'd use plastic where they once would have used metal etc.
For the money, I can't see you getting anything that's likely to last as long.
Amazon reviews has an average 4.8 out of 5 star rating based on 72 reviews, so I'd be fairly happy with that.
I've only had mine under a year, but I did a good bit of reading up before getting it.

Thanks all. In regard to the Miele C2, in regard to maintenance, is it just a matter of replacing the bags and away you go......or is there filters etc that have to be replaced also ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

there's 2 filters that come with the bags. they're not difficult to change.

What do people think of the Henry vacuums

The old ones (from roughly 15 years ago) were legendary, commercial grade over-engineered. The new ones - not so much, just trading on the name/image of the old one. They have issues with the electronics which the old ones never had, the motor in the mothers one went very prematurely too.

colm mcm cant agree with you on that one, virtually no difference from the early ones to present day bar having a two speed motor, I would class them as one of the better value for money vacs on the market for home use or if the customer has a b+b with with more rooms get the commercial version

We have a Henry. 10+ years old. Not one problem. I get the bags in argos. Hth

So are the modern Henrys reliable also?

Is the difference between the old and modern one just the 1 V 2 speed motors ?

yeah they are just as reliable, no pcb for motor control just two windings, hi and low speed with all parts available without costing the earth should you need spares later, prices may vary a little due to the recent sterling/euro differential depending on how long the retailer has the stock in so shop around

So you give the thumbs up to the modern Henrys then

I've got a Henry (well, a Hetty :)) and it's fab. Very solid - have only had it two years but not a bother with it and the bags last ages. Come with loads of attachments as well.

Some Henry's from a few years ago did have a PCB for speed control, where the Hi/Lo switch wasn't a proper switch but an "Autosave" button type switch. And they were prone to fail.

Newer Henry does have a lower power motor now with the ~600W motor, unlike the older one which was 1,000W/1,200W? Not sure if it affects suction much.

Spares and parts for Henry and its ilk are very common, cheap and easy to get though. Probably the one downside of Miele.

I believe that the lower power motor is due to an EU directive that required more energy efficient devices.
Some manufacturers used more powerful motors to pull the air through cheaper filters using cheaper & less efficient impellers. (or so I'm lead to believe).
By limiting the power allowed, manufacturers have had to design them better to produce the same results (hopefully).
