    Hi Everyone,

I am seeking advice from whoever is willing to give it. I am about to start down the long road of building a home for myself and my wife with the view to it being my family home for life. Now I don't want a super size home, maybe a 3/4 bed but I do want that wow factor with it.

I am very interested in Log Homes and would love to build one. My only issue is I am a complete beginner at construction having never even built a lego house.

The question I ask is open to any feedback so please let loose....

    Log Homes-Pros/Cons-Where do I start-Who do I talk to?

Will the log cabin meet our building regulations?
I don't think they will but I'm open to correction.

Hi welcome to the c&p forum

Why not use the search function, you'll find loads of information on a hoist of previous threads that will cover your questions.

Planning: start with an architect. Perhaps search the cork coco website 'cork rural housing guidelines'. Finding a site that you are eligible to build on can be tricky

Your budget needs to match your 3/4bed requirements

Ask the log cabin supplier how they will meet building regulations, particularly Part L.

If you are thinking of building a standard home, and then cladding the exterior to look like a log cabin then that's a different ball game.

    Hi bryankayak,

I am currently looking at the same idea for myself.

    1. You cannot get a mortgage on a log cabin, also a personal loan do not tell them its for a log cabin

    2. Planning is needed if you place it on a concrete slab (making it more permanent, from what i am told) , depending on how off the beaten track you are you may just get away with it.

    3. Have you considered the options for plumbing, electrical and sewage?

The base, sewarge and plumbing is the easy bit. Have you thought about how the cabin will comply with Irish building regulations?

As i said, it really depends on how far off the beaten track you are?........if you cant be seen from the road i wouldnt bother with planning.

Iif you build a concrete house and the council give out you are at the loss of the house

If you assemble a log cabin on a slab and the council give out, your at the loss of a slab you can sell the cabin.

Its easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.
If you apply for planning and get refused, then you have drawn attention.

From what I hear log cabins are a nightmare for planning as they are only semi permenant, easily modified, and moved.........council dont like them
