Over 200 families in Dublin are facing eviction, as their homes look set to be sold to meet debts by a property developer.
    http://www.98fm.com/200-Families-In-Tyrrelstown-Facing-Eviction

So GS bought the debts and now wants to empty the estate and sell lit. Surely they can't do this?

Nama, for the people, by the people, of the people. vulture funds at it's best.

Sell their property? Why not?

As long as they give the minimum notice to their tenants, I don't see the problem.

Think they gave them 24 hours or something.
Don't see why they can't sell them with tenants in place?Saves bother for the new owners.

Do you have a link to show they only gave 24 hours notice to get out? If they did the tenants don't need to leave and can lodge a claim through the PRTB.
If they gave full notice then they are perfectly entitled to ask people to leave so they can sell the property as any landlord is.

We just need to elect a parliament predominately made up of left wing TD's who can form a government that will put the people first.

oh wait... that's what we did do!

They can't sell houses because there's a housing shortage?

Bear in mind that they're selling the houses, not knocking them down. Other people will move in.

They may be peeved off but, in the end, they rented a house and the owner now wants to sell the house. What can they do?

A large number of people who rent are unable to afford their own property. These properties will most likely be rented out again at higher rates after being bought as investment properties.
Rents are far too high as it is and this I would guess won't improve that situation and will leave a lot of people struggling to an even greater degree than they already were to both find and pay for a new rented property, exacerbated in no small part by the competition they will face from each other(persons living in and now being removed from the said development).
Of course the owner has the right to sell but this situation looks likely to be slightly OTT considering the fact that the tenants could well have been left in place as the properties may likely be bought by investors or even one investor.

This has got nothing to do with NAMA, it was Ulsterbank that sold the debt to Goldman Sachs.

They lent the money to Twinlite and have sold on the debt.

Meh, the developer will be able to pay off some debts and the people will get notice. I don't see how the fact that it's 200 families makes it any different to a landlord selling and giving notice. People aren't dying here.

Over 60 families evicted, some with just one months notice, you don't think that's a problem? Over 60 families in one area now looking for somewhere to live when there's a housing shortage? No problem!

They can't buy them, they have been prevented from bidding on them

is that not preventing free trade and illegal?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,247 ✭✭✭Maguined

It's not and the families have not been prevented from bidding. The seller has chosen to sell them in bulk rather than individually. If they wanted the families could all come together and bid on the bulk sales. What they cannot do is demand that the seller is forced to sell them individually rather than in bulk so the families can bid on their own individually.

Storieslike this are why owning is the better option in the long term.

Isn't this mixing up two different stories? I thought the deal was that the 60 being 'evicted' are renting, and the full 200 are also renting?

All the political commentary and some media stuff on this is totally irresponsible and OTT. No one is being 'evicted' from their family home. I'm not saying it's not a nice thing to happen (had it myself) but when you don't own the property there's not a whole lot you can do about it. Surely them's the breaks?

Yeah, pretty much. The risk you take when you rent in Ireland is that you may find yourself evicted under these circumstances.

The issue here is poor tenancy protection for long-term rentals rather than NAMA or "vulture" funds, etc. The company in question are doing nothing legally wrong, and not even ethically wrong from a high level.

Are all of those 200homes in D15? Article says only that 60 families from tyrrelstown got letters

The reason I ask is that there are only 31 properties for rent in D15 for less than €1500 per month.

If yes prices in D 15 will go up again..

Don't see the issue. Goldman Sachs owns the properties. Can do what they like with them.
