So on Friday my car broke down and I was towed into a garage. The chap who brought me to the garage said my fan belt was gone and it's around €70 to replace. He didn't really look at the car, just a quick look under the bonnet and brought me to the garage of my choice.

I'm a little worried the problem is a bit bigger. For some weeks now my car, on and off, has been making a loud rattling noise over the engine. I brought it into FastFit who said it was more than likely the starter motor and to drive away until I want to get it fixed. I got the part to replace it and it's due a service shortly so I intended doing it the one job with my local mechanic. The tow driver said this would point to the fan belt.

When I went into start my car it reported on the screen 'Alternator Workshop' and the power steering is gone. Does this tie in with it just being a fan belt that's gone or a bigger problem?

    Cheers.

If fan belt snapped the alternator wouldn't be charging the battery in the car. The starter motor would use the power from the battery to start the car but if the fan belt snapped there would not be enough power being stored in the battery from the alternator.

Has the fan belt been replaced? Were there any warning lights in the weeks leading up to this when you say it was rattling?

The rattling noise could be caused by one of the pulleys on which the belt sits. If there is increased resistance from such pulley it will wear the belt much quicker which is probably why the fan belt snapped.

Your steering is electromechanical, which means if your alternator hasn't been charging your battery your power steering won't work.

Sounds like fan belt to me, too. And since someone looked under the bonnet he knows even better than us.

Easy job and not too expensive. You should be back on the road in no time.
