I wonder will the ratings out do D'Arcy?

How many fcuking chat shows do they need on RTE? I suppose there's no chance they'd use the money we are forced to hand over to them every year for something a bit different, is there?

They just had to axe the Saturday Night Show because it was beating the LLS in the ratings and because they had just done a deal with D'Arcy worth €[ridiculous] a year.

And then they had to accept how popular Brendan was and thus give him another primetime show.

If they had just realised that nothing was broken and nothing needed fixing, they would have saved themselves a packet.

I probably should admit now that I have only ever watched a few minutes of D'Arcy's show - and by accident at that. :o:o:o

When the SNS ended, I decided - with some reluctance - that I would give D'Arcy a chance, even if he and his show were never going to be as good as Brendan and the SNS.

Then I saw that the show was going to be called simply The Ray D'Arcy Show - thus continuing RTE's seeming obsession with sticking "The" before the host's name and "Show" after it - and that was enough to put me off watching it altogether, without giving it that chance. :o:o:o

Yes, the respective names of Graham Norton's and Jonathan Ross's shows also consist of "The", the host's name, and "Show" - but the practice works in those cases, and also the BBC and ITV aren't as obsessed with the practice as the folks at Montrose seem to be.

And surely it would be taking the píss if Brendan's new show was to be called The Brendan O'Connor Show, since it's set to follow a panel format. I'd still have more time for it than D'Arcy, though.

According to the Irish Sun, the chat show host has filmed three pilots of a new panel series ahead of one being comissioned by RTE.
“It was a bear pit of a show with Brendan the ringmaster of the Circus. It really suited him,” an insider said of the pilot.

Brendan in a Bear Pit Panel Show? That sounds familiar

They should call it "I Can't Believe It's Not Don't Feed The Gondolas!!"

    Ah well, fingers crossed.

Also, I like how The Examiner cut and pasted an Article from goss.ie which was lifted from The Irish Sun.

And as for Ray Darcy, to anyone who is surprised he isn't any good on Saturday Nights ...

It says O'Connor is making a €1million comeback.

I know this sounds a bit stupid from me but does that actually mean they are considering paying him €1million to be a host of a show on RTE.

Because if it does then RTE have really lost the run of themselves.

How the **** can anyone on Irish TV come close to earning that considering they have basically zero rivals in the TV market.

They all get large ratings and decent sponsorship money, so they don't cost you anything.

That is insane. There is no need for another evening/late night talk show on RTE.

What RTE desperately need is a live morning show, regardless of how few viewers it may get. At the moment their weekday schedule on RTE One is teleshopping until 8.45, then a repeat of the Today show until 10.15. Pretty grim viewing.

Morning Edition in 2013 and 2014 was a missed opportunity.

Insiders reckon Brendan’s new show will be a hit with viewers.

Oh well.... if "Insiders" reckon it'll be a hit then that's a dead cert then!

I'd love to hear just once "RTE Insiders reckon the show is a steaming pile of ****e and will be cancelled within a fortnight!"

The link says it's going to be a panel show and from the look of the supposed guests it's just going to be The Panel.

I'm not feeling too good about this one I have to say.

Have to agree with the above. Dont know where they are going to get the guests for THREE talk shows, when they rarely get enough of a guest list for their flagship show, The Late Late.

The proper move to make last year was to move Brendan to The Late Late Show and move Tubridy back to Saturday Night. Personally, I would obviously just fire Tubridy outright. But since that will never happen, the best we can hope for is that they give him a kick up the ar$e so that he starts bringing something entertaining to the screen.

And I'm actually a bit upset that RTE never took up my idea for a new series - "Impolite Questions" with Paul Kimmage. The idea being that you bring on the most mundane, harmless guest and Paul Kimmage ravages them until they walk off just like the Bee Gees did. Imagine, with Paul, how a simple cookery item could turn in to a pitched battle.

Darina Allen: "So we put an extra knob of butter in the bowl and then stir it through. Then lay it out in the oven for fifteen minutes. After fifteen minutes, you then check to see that it has set and if it needs a few more minutes, then give it a few more minutes. ok?"
Kimmage: "Forget the fifteen minutes, it's been fifteen years and in not one interview have you addressed the court case and what happened with your husband. Why is nobody prepared to ask you about this, and yet I continue to see you on the TV and hear you on the radio every single week?"
    Darina Allen: *drops whisk*

As suggested by another poster, this is the panel with a vastly inferior host.

I really like Brendan and thought he was the best Saturday night show that rte had dished up to date, but sweet divine, Neil Delamere and Brian Kennedy as guests, hopefully not panel members, but even as a one off it just couldn't be a worse line up.

Brendan O’Connor is set to return to our screen on May 18 at 9.30pm on RTE 1 with a new show reportedly called Cutting Edge

According to today’s Irish Sun, the former Saturday Night presenter will be cutting into the people and stories in the news each week with a regular set of panellists ...

RTE are said to have no worries over their host. “Brendan has risen to the challenge. We think people who enjoyed his old Saturday night show will feel this is what they’ve been waiting for.” - See more at:

Hopefully it will be decent, I'm glad to see Brendan back on the television anyway. Might take a while to tweak the format and settle in but fingers crossed for Cutting Edge aka The Wednesday Night Show!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,930 ✭✭✭PeterTheEighth

I always find it astonishing when RTE presenters criticise politicians for being disingenuous and "spinning" a story. RTE are biggest bullsh1t artists of the lot.

Or get Brendan to co host the "Stay There With Miriam" show during the Summer. Or even better, "The Naughty Or Nice Show (with Brendan And Miriam respectively)"

I dunno, if it's a different format (and I hope it will be) I think a Wednesday night slot could work well.

I'm imagining it will be some hybrid of The Panel/VinnieB/10 O'Clock Live/The Last Leg. A lighthearted review of the week discussion show, rather than a chat show. If that's the case, then I'd prefer to watch that mid-week, rather than at the weekend.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 18,266 Mod ✭✭✭✭CatFromHue

I'm not liking the sound of this show.

What I liked about his Saturday show was that he was able to have a conversation with his guests and it looks like that's not going to happen in this new one.

Cutting Edge... isn't that the name of Channel 4's long-running political and social documentary series? :o:o;)

If this new show is going to be on Wednesdays, then I gather that Stay There! will be back for a 12th consecutive summer. ;)

I do like the thought of Brendan and Miriam hosting something together, though... :o:D;)

Yeah, Stay There! is back again, presumably so Future President Mir can remind everyone that she's, like, really interested in people not just politics, genuinely.

“We are having Saturday Night with Miriam or as my children would say, Saturday night without Miriam, as she goes out to work” “We have a return date, but they haven’t been announced so I am not going to say anything, it will be the summer,” she exclusively told RSVP Magazine.

    Here's a bit more about it ...

    http://www.rte.ie/tv/audienceparticipation/cuttingedge.html
Brendan O'Connor returns to our screens this May with his brand new RTÉ 1 series "Brendan O'Connor's Cutting Edge" and you can be there, up close and personal to see it first hand!

Each week, Brendan O'Connor will be joined by three regular panelists to cut into the week's news from Ireland and around the world, in the style of a darkly comedic Post Mortem. This hugely entertaining show will feature the big news stories, alongside the colourful nuggets that may have escaped the public's attention. As with all the best discussions there will be some good laughs and some fierce disagreements as the winners and losers of the week come under the penetrating gaze of the panel. This show is serious fun.

The three recurring panelists will be drawn from a reliable stable of opinionated commentators, featuring a newshound and a comedian alongside someone from the world of sport, media, business or the arts. They will gather around the table, eyeball to eyeball, toe to toe, with nowhere to run and nowhere to hide, armed with their incisive wit. This is no place to be coy. Brendan O'Connor said: "It's the most intense experience I have ever had on camera."

Prepare to witness the biggest water cooler moments of the week, kicking off on Wednesday May the 18th at 9.35pm on RTE One.

Cutting Edge will be recorded live in RTE studios, and we're offering you the chance to witness the discussions first hand. For your chance to be part of the live audience and see the action at it's closest, send us an email at tickets@mindthegapfilms.com

Tickets are free. Audience members must be 18 or over.

I wasn't initially a fan of BOC's original chatshow but I came around to it. O'Connor is the most likeable I would say of any presenter at RTE. Best of all he lets his guests talk and express themselves. A bit like Gay Byrne he knows how to let the guests speak freely so they say something interesting or funny, as opposed to other chatshow hosts who have 9 or 10 questions on their cue cards that they are going to ask regardless and wrap it up when all the questions have been asked.

I want to wish Brendan the very best of luck with his new show (his people read this thread :D).

I'm hoping and praying that it's a big success for him because he never deserved to be shafted from his successful Saturday night slot in favour of Fr Ray D'arcy. RTE, if I want a preachy sermon I can attend Saturday night mass.

I think this format might grow into something over time. if Brendan is given the space to explore and experiment a bit, I think it could be quite a success. He rightly said that it's a dog-fight for the Friday/Saturday night show circuit. it's so refreshing to hear him say, "no book pluggers", no "misery slots" for this show.
It reminds me a little of of Nighthawks with Shay Healy as in, just a bit different.
I wish him well and will give Brendan some space to get off the ground, as I hope RTE do also.
