Petrol Vs Diesel Quandary - help appreciated

This one is a bit different to the usual Diesel Vs Petrol queries.

I recently ordered a 1.2 TSI 110bhp Octavia. The dealer made a mistake and ordered a 1.6 TDI 110bhp. Everything else about the cars are identical. Normally, the diesel is about €2355 more expensive. The dealer has offered to sell me the diesel for €500 more (saving €1855)

So, what should I do? - accept the diesel offer or wait for the petrol to come in?

I test drove the diesel and it seems fine, but I'm concerned about:
    - potential DPF woes
    - maybe petrol has more oomph?
    - dieselgate
    - paying a bit more money for something I didn't really want to begin with.

    on the other hand
    - the car I end up with is worth more - is it a good bargain?
    - would a diesel be easier to sell on?

Does anyone have any opinions? - driving myself nuts here...

This, the decision is really going to be based on whether a diesel suits your needs or not.

I'll have to check the service book of my existing car, but roughly 15k Miles/year. These are rural (not stuck in traffic)

I would doubt the dealer "made" that mistake, is the diesel pre registered if it is then how was that a mistake? Go with the car your ordered.

I do believe it was a genuine mistake. We ordered extras and it took about 8 or 9 weeks to be delivered. Everything we ordered (apart from the engine) is correct.

The dealer has no problem re-ordering the correct engine and will give us a temporary car while we wait.

i think stick with your original car spec you ordered. you were happy with the setup of the car, that is why you ordered one so i wouldn't change

I'd say your mileage is borderline for needing a diesel but it's a small extra outlay, it will be worth more when you come to sell, your driving type should be ok with a dpf and you'll save a small amount at the pumps. If you've driven the car and are happy with it (this is the main thing) I'd say it represents a decent deal for you.

Go for the diesel and then sell it after the first year if you don't particularly like it, the resale will make it worth while.

ok you arent doing city driving, its only 500 more and 15k miles a year is borderline diesel, I would probably take it...

It's your driving style you need to take note of when it comes to driving a diesel. If you do mostly short stop/start journeys then a petrol car is more suitable. If you do frequent longer journeys then a diesel will be perfectly suitable. For example, 10000 miles of mostly motorway driving is more suitable for a diesel than 150000 miles of mostly city driving.

If that criteria is suitable to your driving style then taking the diesel car for an extra €500 is good value but if you were originally happy to stick to petrol then it's up to you.

Feck it, I'd go for it tbh.

Not often an Irish dealer is so fair, and I doubt he's going to make much if anything on that car. I'd take it, and I prefer petrol cars over diesel. Twas meant to be.
He also was fair about giving you another car in the meantime, if you still wanted the petrol ordered. I think he deserves naming and praising.

Thanks everyone for all your helpful replies. The votes are 11 for Diesel and 7 for Petrol.

So Volkswagen Bank are now the proud owners of another PCP agreement. I went for the diesel.

This 'safety net' was a good way of looking at it:

I have a petrol 1.2TSI estate ordered. Also doing about 15K a year and mostly short trips.

Was worried about the DPF etc, but if I got a further 1800 discount on a Diesel I would probably go for that too
